Jackson Pollock's (1912–1956) first large-scale painting, Mural, in many ways represents the birth of Pollock, the legend. The controversial artist’s creation of this painting has been recounted in dozens of books and dramatized in the Oscar-winning film Pollock. Rumors—such as it was painted in one alcohol-fueled night and at first didn’t fit the intended space—abound. But never in doubt was that the creation of the painting was pivotal, not only for Pollock but for the Abstract Expressionists who would follow his radical conception of art —“no limits, just edges.” Mural, painted in 1943, was Pollock’s first major commission. It was made for the entrance hall of the Manhattan duplex of Peggy Guggenheim, who donated it to the University of Iowa in the 1950s where it stayed until its 2012 arrival for conservation and study at the Getty Center. This book unveils the findings of that examination, providing a more complete picture of Pollock’s process than ever before. It includes an essay by eminent Pollock scholar Ellen Landau and an introduction by comedian Steve Martin. It accompanies an exhibition of the painting on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from March 11 through June 1, 2014.

In June 1984, Jane Golden, a young muralist from Margate, New Jersey, headed up a project that was originally planned as a six-week youth program in the fledgling Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network. This small exercise in fighting graffiti grew into the most vibrant public art project in the United States. The recipient of writing fellowships from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. She lives in Philadelphia. Monica Yant Kinneyis a metropolitan columnist at The Philadelphia Inquirer, where she has worked since 1996. She was formerly the television critic at the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times. She grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana; graduated from the University of Notre Dame; and is married to David Kinney, a political reporter for the Newark Star-Ledger. This is her first book. David Graham is a freelance photographer whose work has appeared in Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and The New York Times Magazine, among other publications. He has published four previous books, including Taking Liberties (2001). He is Associate Professor of photography at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Jack Ramsdale has been involved with the Mural Arts Program since 1998. In November 2001, his mural design titled "ONE WORLD" in remembrance of the victims of 9/11 was painted across 15th Street from City Hall. He attended Cranbrook Academy of Art, receiving an MFA with a photography concentration. He has had a commercial photography business for the last fifteen years and continues to create art in Philadelphia, where he now resides.

The United States government got into the art business when it instituted a series of programs to keep artists working during the Depression years. Tennessee received its fair share, and most of the original thirty are still in existence. A few have been moved to different locations, but the author notes that most of the murals “are still on that same wall in the same small post office in that same small town where they were placed so long ago.” Unfortunately, many people are not aware of these murals—even in the areas where they are located. Written for the purpose of enhancing the knowledge of Tennesseans about the murals found in their post offices, this book will be of interest to artists and historians as well. Hull has included numerous photographs along with his descriptions of each mural and its composition, the mural’s relation to history, and a biographical sketch of each artist.
