Excerpt from My Four Years in Germany AM writing what should have been the last chapter of this book as a foreword because I want to bring home to our people the gravity of the situation; because I want to tell them that the military and naval power of the German Empire is unbroken; that of the twelve million men whom the Kaiser has called to the colours but one million, five hundred thousand have been killed, five hundred thousand permanently disabled, not more than five hundred thousand are prisoners of war, and about five hundred thousand constitute the number of wounded or those on the sick list of each day, leaving at all times about nine million effectives under arms. I state these figures because Americans do not grasp either the magnitude or the importance of this war. Perhaps the statement that over five million prisoners of war are held in the various countries will bring home to Americans the enormous mass of men engaged. It may therefore be well to state that the following chapters, written to please no one and at nobody's invitation, were the outcome of a disappointment. When, upon the outbreak of war, I was compelled hastily to quit my home in Charlottenburg, leaving behind me books and clothes, and even a carefully packed trunk which had been intended to accompany me to the "only unexploited valley in the Canton Valais" (an annual illusion whose destruction is, however, rarely unpleasant), I found that, for a time at any rate, there was nothing to do but take a holiday, the first long holiday in England for thirteen years. After several years' residence in Germany, I returned home and was surprised to find how little people in, general knew of German life. A vague idea of beer-drinking students thick-headed emigrant peasants, metaphysics and philosophy no one can understand, with a cloud of pipe-smoke enveloping the whole, seemed tome the received impression of a people, who yearly have been pouring into our land, bringing with them their thrift and talent. That there be truth in the general conception no one can deny, but that all the sweet amenities of life spring up in its domestic relations, that there is a charm living in a country where every rood of land teems with poetry and historic lore, does not re quire me to tell. That the constancy of their affec tions and the goodness of their nature commands our respect, has so impressed me, that I have ventured to print my rambling thoughts.
