In Seasons in My Garden, award-winning writer Sr. Elizabeth Wagner reveals how tending to a garden in her Maine hermitage brought her to a deeper understanding of what it means to have faith, love others, and hope in the mercy of God. Her keen eye for the most intricate details of nature will help you find a path that brings you closer to God as well. Sr. Elizabeth Wagner believed God was calling her into deeper contemplation, so she built a hermitage in the Maine wilderness in order to ponder nature and become closer to God. Seasons in My Garden is a thought-provoking series of meditations, written as Sr. Wagner watched her own monastic garden progress through the seasons. Her reflections invite you to look over her shoulder as she tends to her beautiful garden and meditates on the mysteries of God’s creation and how it corresponds with her own life. In this captivating book, you will relate to Sr. Wagner as she struggles with feelings of a cold heart—just as her garden lay frozen under a foot of snow—and realizing that God was working to renew her spirit. As sudden storms threatened to destroy her hard work, Sr. Wagner will help you understand that careful preparation of the soul will help you resist the temptation to resent others. Seasons in My Garden intricately weaves insights from Sr. Wagner’s own growth through the seasons with spiritual guidance and an understanding that patient tending to your soul will help you grow into a beautiful garden that God can use to reflect his glory.

The stories of Jesus, placed in the context of the familiar and factual, are filled with metaphors that audiences can understand and appreciate. Metaphors not only inform and persuade, but also fire up readers' imaginations and get them involved as participants. Humans are primed to think and feel metaphorically, and so Garden of the Soul aims to metaphorically explore five landscapes that feature prominently in the Bible. Each metaphorical landscape throws light on an aspect of spiritual life. The bountiful garden speaks of growth, the flowing river calls for unceasing prayer, the raging sea mirrors the turbulence of a journey of faith, the barren desert transforms by emptying life's clutter, and the high mountain challenges readers to scale its peak to glimpse a transcendent vision of God. This book will inform, enrich, and challenge readers' spiritual lives throughout their journey from garden to mountain.

The story picks up where the first book ended. The Lister family moves to the farm seeking refuge from the prejudices and evil acts committed against them. The family is full of hope that they will be able to live a life of peace and acceptance in a community that accepts people based on their values as fellow human beings free from prejudices and hatred. The story unfolds in the early 1950s and is told mostly through the eyes of one of the young Lister girls. It highlights the challenges faced by the Lister family as they adapt to a new life on the farm. It details the hard work and struggles faced by each member of the family. Complications of family dynamics continues to place roadblocks in their lives that must be resolved, altered, or accepted. The Listers continue to practice their religion with prayers to seek strength and guidance from God. The Listers rely on faith and God's promises to navigate through the life that God has given them. Highlighted are the people that cross paths with the family in their new home. The Listers find many positive aspects to living in the rural community. The farm families concentrate on the enormous amount of work required to run their farms. There is little time to entertain hatred and prejudices. People are accepted without regard to their race, religion, economic status, or gender. Often the families gather to celebrate happy occasions. The families work together to harvest their crops. The community rallies together to offer support to those in need. They gather to mourn any sad times experienced by members of the community. Helping hands and loving hearts are common among the people of Heartsville. While there is no perfect place on earth, it is refreshing to find a community that lives by the golden rule to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In life, there are good people and bad people and people that can go either way. There will always be times of joy, times of laughter, times of sadness, and times of concern and worry. Heartsville is a community that allows peace and healing. It's just what the Listers needed.
