Poetry. This book collects the 86 poems that survive from the Mother Goose-influenced period of Lorine Neidecker: 1935 to 1945. The NEW GOOSE poems share the anti-authoritarian, subversive bent of their models, reflecting on the politics and economics of the time: the Depression, free market economics, socialism, and war. A key figure in the "Objectivist" poetry movement, Neidecker's poetic influence continues to be strongly felt. Her GRANITE PAIL, first published in 1985, is an SPD bestseller. "My man says the wind blows from the South,/ we go out fishing, he has no luck,/ I catch a dozen, that burns him up,/ I face the east and the wind's in my mouth,/ but my man has to have it in the south" -- from NEW GOOSE.

This publication aims to provide guidance on sustainable goose production systems that are based on the natural physiological and behavioural advantages of the goose. These advantages include the fact that: they can consume and digest large amounts of high fibre and low-quality feed; they are easy to manage; and their rapid growth renders them one of the most efficient sources for meat production. In addition, feathers/down and fatty liver are valuable by-products, while their strong territorial instinct makes them very effective guards. As selective feeders, geese have been used for weed control in a wide range of crops. All aspects of goose production are discussed in this book, including feeding and nutrition, housing, general husbandry, flock heath and breeding. Regional differences in production practices are also described.

Revised and updated, with a new afterword by the author “There is much talk about ‘audacity’ these days, but true chutzpah is when the workers take over the factory and take on the bank. Kari Lydersen’s invaluable account of the Republic sit-down strike is an instruction manual for worker dignity.” —Mike Davis, author of Buda’s Wagon and City of Quartz December 5, 2008: It wasn’t supposed to work like this. Days after getting a $45 billion bailout from the U.S. government, Bank of America shut down a line of credit that kept Chicago’s Republic Windows & Doors factory operating. The bosses, who knew what was coming, had been sneaking machinery out in the middle of the night. They closed the factory and sent the workers home. Then something surprising happened: Republic’s workers occupied the factory and refused to leave. Kari Lydersen, an award-winning reporter, tells the story of the factory takeover, elegantly transforming the workers’ story into a parable of labor activism for the twenty-first century, one that concludes with a surprising and little-reported victory.

The Goose Creek Bridge is the gateway to the Saint James, Goose Creek Parish in South Carolina and the church, cemeteries, chapels, and sanctuaries within. The work chronicles the bridge as it conveyed congregants to the pews of the church on selected Easter Sundays during every era of the three-hundred year saga and describes from that perspective, key personalities and their salient institutions transcending centuries in a small but critically important section of South Carolina. Readers find an in-depth description of the Yamassee War from the perspective of those residing in its vortex. The work chronicles English soldiers chasing wily patriots on both sides of the aging bridge and three generations later, young black warriors of the United States Army with equally youthful white officers camping near the overpass. This comprehensive account explains the trauma of wars and the aftermaths, as well as the impact of public roads, taverns, rail lines and the durable values of the old and new south upon the rural people, and their sacred institutions.

The Barnacle Goose, a distinctive, handsome black-and-white bird, gets its name from a mediaeval myth that the birds hatched from barnacles – how else to explain their sudden appearance each autumn in northern Britain? We now know, of course, that the birds migrate from Arctic Russia, Norway and Svalbard to winter throughout northern Europe. This book represents a culmination of more than 25 years of Barnacle Goose research. It represents the story of one of Europe's most celebrated long-term behavioral studies, detailing the lives of these social and sociable birds. Chapters include sections on pair formation and bonding, family and population dynamics, brood parasitism, food and feeding, size and shape in different populations, life cycle, survivorship, dispersal, migration, and conservation, with particular regard to climate change. It is a rigorous and thorough examination of the lives of these birds, in fine Poyser tradition.
