This collection of essays by biblical scholars is the first book-length treatment of the 2014 film Noah, directed by Darren Aronofsky. The film has proved to be of great interest to scholars working on the interface between the Bible and popular culture, not only because it was heralded as the first of a new generation of biblical blockbusters, but also because of its bold, provocative, and yet unusually nuanced approach to the interpretation and use of the Noah tradition, in both its biblical and extra-biblical forms. The book’s chapters, written by both well-established and up-and-coming scholars, engage with and analyze a broad range of issues raised by the film, including: its employment and interpretation of the ancient Noah traditions; its engagement with contemporary environmental themes and representation of non-human animals; its place within the history of cinematic depictions of the flood, status as an ‘epic’, and associated relationship to spectacle; the theological implications of its representation of a hidden and silent Creator and responses to perceived revelation; the controversies surrounding its reception among religious audiences, especially in the Muslim world; and the nature and implications of its convoluted racial and gender politics. Noah as Antihero will be of considerable interest to scholars conducting research in the areas of religion and film, contemporary hermeneutics, reception history, religion and popular culture, feminist criticism, and ecological ethics.

The story of Noah, like so many stories in the Old Testament, only gives us hints of its epic proportions: God speaking to man and warning of a coming disaster, an ark the size of three football fields, every kind of animal in the world coming to the ark, and at last a flood covering the whole earth. We get glimpses of how big this story is, yet it can be challenging to understand its depth. Building upon what the Bible teaches, Noah: A Journal of Praise takes you and your family back thousands of years to what it was like to be a passenger on the most epic journey of all time. This imaginative and beautifully illustrated book helps us explore the many facets of God's mercy to Noah, his family, and mankind. This book will provide hours of discussion and thought. Read through this journal with your kids and then return to the story again and again to marvel at what God has done.

Winner of the 2017 Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise Winner of the 2017 The George A. and Jean S. DeLong Book History Book Prize The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls revealed a world of early Jewish writing larger than the Bible, from multiple versions of biblical texts to "revealed" books not found in our canon. Despite this diversity, the way we read Second Temple Jewish literature remains constrained by two anachronistic categories: a theological one, "Bible," and a bibliographic one,"book." The Literary Imagination in Jewish Antiquity suggests ways of thinking about how Jews understood their own literature before these categories had emerged. In many Jewish texts, there is an awareness of a vast tradition of divine writing found in multiple locations that is only partially revealed in available scribal collections. Ancient heroes such as David are imagined not simply as scriptural authors, but as multidimensional characters who come to be known as great writers who are honored as founders of growing textual traditions. Scribes recognize the divine origin of texts such as Enoch literature and other writings revealed to ancient patriarchs, which present themselves not as derivative of the material that we now call biblical, but prior to it. Sacred writing stretches back to the dawn of time, yet new discoveries are always around the corner. Using familiar sources such as the Psalms, Ben Sira, and Jubilees, Eva Mroczek tells an unfamiliar story about sacred writing not bound in a Bible. In listening to the way ancient writers describe their own literature-rife with their own metaphors and narratives about writing-The Literary Imagination in Jewish Antiquity also argues for greater suppleness in our own scholarly imagination, no longer bound by modern canonical and bibliographic assumptions.

David Korban is a PhD student of archeology following in the footsteps of his famous father. David is invited to accompany an expedition led by his father to recover the long-lost Ark of Noah and return it to the states where an unusual museum is currently under construction; one backed by big money and with political overtones. The Mountain of Ararat is called Agri Dagh or "Mountain of Pain" by the local Armenian community whose history is richly intertwined in the Ark's history. Several locals are used by the recovery team as guides and David becomes close to two of them. The mountain scenes are exciting and breath-taking, the story full of plot turns and twists. The story of a worldwide flood permeates all of the peoples of the earth regardless of their backgrounds. Could the story really be true? If David, his father and the recovery team can get the Ark back to the states, it could change the way the world views much of history and the origins of humankind.
