A National Nutrition Surveillance and Monitoring System

Identifies features of a model nutrition monitoring system & examines approaches to incorporating those features in the National Nutrition Monitoring & Related Research Program. Presents & describes features of a model nutrition monitoring system & shows the strengths & weaknesses of various strategies for achieving four of the model features. Some parts of the program which are discussed are: coordinated sets of activities, continuous data supply, reliable inferences about subpopulations, & support for state & local monitoring activities.

Abstract: This hearing discusses legislation which would provide up-to-date, accurate, and useful information on what Amerians are eating and what health effects this diet produces. Testimony is received from two government officials (Dept. of Health and Human Services and Dept. of Agriculture), a representative from the National Cattlemen's Association, the American Heart Association, and the Association of State and Territorial Public Health Nutrition Directors.
