Excerpt from Oh, Virginia Virginia she was named, but she has always said "It's too grandly awful," and she is usually called Jinks, except when she has been in scrapes. Somehow that happens pretty often with Jinks, but perhaps it is not always her fault. Jinks has an imagination, and when it is working it promptly moves her to action, and no one is more surprised than she when the result is disaster. If the neighborhood is laughing half the time at Jinks, and the other half is wondering what that child will do next, it is largely because she is left too much to herself by a mother and father who have not mt realized how much she needs them. When the biggest scrape of all came along, Mrs. Weatherby was there to help straighten things out, and what the scrape was and how it was happily ended is told in the story. Excerpt from Types of British Vegetation: By Members of the General Committee for the Survey and Study of British Vegetation The work Of systematically surveying vegetation and recording the results on vegetation maps was begun in Scotland by the late Robert Smith in the Closing years of last century, and continued by his brother, 1 G. Smith, and various other workers. In 1904 these workers formed a committee, with the somewhat ponderous title of The Central Committee for the Survey and Study Of British Vegetation, to organise and facilitate work on these lines. Download V A Yankov on Non Classical Logics History and Philosophy of Mathematics Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This book is dedicated to V.A. Yankov’s seminal contributions to the theory of propositional logics. His papers, published in the 1960s, are highly cited even today. The Yankov characteristic formulas have become a very useful tool in propositional, modal and algebraic logic. The papers contributed to this book provide the new results on different generalizations and applications of characteristic formulas in propositional, modal and algebraic logics. In particular, an exposition of Yankov’s results and their applications in algebraic logic, the theory of admissible rules and refutation systems is included in the book. In addition, the reader can find the studies on splitting and join-splitting in intermediate propositional logics that are based on Yankov-type formulas which are closely related to canonical formulas, and the study of properties of predicate extensions of non-classical propositional logics. The book also contains an exposition of Yankov’s revolutionary approach to constructive proof theory. The editors also include Yankov’s contributions to history and philosophy of mathematics and foundations of mathematics, as well as an examination of his original interpretation of history of Greek philosophy and mathematics.

With the rise of genomics, the life sciences have entered a new era. This book provides a comprehensive history of mapping procedures as they were developed in classical genetics. An accompanying volume - From Molecular Genetics to Genomics - covers the history of molecular genetics and genomics. The book shows that the technology of genetic mapping is by no means a recent acquisition of molecular genetics or even genetic engineering. It demonstrates that the development of mapping technologies has accompanied the rise of modern genetics from its very beginnings. In Section One, Mendelian genetics is set in perspective from the viewpoint of the detection and description of linkage phenomena. Section Two addresses the role of mapping for the experimental working practice of classical geneticists, their social interactions and for the laboratory 'life worlds'. With detailed analyses of the scientific practices of mapping and its illustration of the diversity of mapping practices this book is a significant contibution to the history of genetics. A companion volume from the same editors - From Molecular Genetics to Genomics: The Mapping Cultures of Twentieth Century Genetics - covers the history of molecular genetics and genomics.
