Excerpt from On the Construction and Use of the MicroscopeThese motives have induced me to give the book a more popular form, as well as to make it as practically useful as possible. The theoretical portion, therefore, only contains the principles of Dioptrics and Catoptrics, without which the construction of the microscope could not be understood; and the section treating of these subjects is further limited to the explanation of the apparatus used at the present time, although I have appended, for the sake' of complete ness, an historical Sketch of the manner in which each part of the microscope is constructed and arranged. The instruc tions for the use of the microscope are given with the great est fulness, as constituting the most important section of the work and as the dioptric compound microscope is the one most used at present, I have limited my observations to that alone.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Microscope: The Construction, Theory and Use of the Microscope Two things seemed to encourage me: one was the gratifying way in which the last-mentioned brochure was dealt with by the critic, whose kindness in overlooking its many faults and failings had greatly impressed me; whilst the other was the fact - which gave me no small pleasure - that so many workers with camera and microscope had expressed themselves with such pronounced generosity as to the utility of its subject matter. Excerpt from The Microscope: Its Construction and Management; Including Technique, Photo-Micrography, and the Past and Future of the Microscope The Fourth Edition of this book had only just appeared when Mr. Wynne E. Baxter, a skilful English microscopist, honoured us by offering to publish an English Edition. We cordially accepted Mr. Baxter's offer; I but in the meantime the Antwerp Microscopical Exhibition has taken place, at which the best work of the most skilful manufacturers of the present day appeared. We were especially anxious that any English microscopist who might wish to read our treatise should have the advantage of the recent study which our position, as President Director of the Exhibition, has enabled us to make.
