This book offers an inspiring and naïve view on language and reasoning. It presents a new approach to ordinary reasoning that follows the author’s former work on fuzzy logic. Starting from a pragmatic scientific view on meaning as a quantity, and the common sense reasoning from a primitive notion of inference, which is shared by both laypeople and experts, the book shows how this can evolve, through the addition of more and more suppositions, into various formal and specialized modes of precise, imprecise, and approximate reasoning. The logos are intended here as a synonym for rationality, which is usually shown by the processes of questioning, guessing, telling, and computing. Written in a discursive style and without too many technicalities, the book presents a number of reflections on the study of reasoning, together with a new perspective on fuzzy logic and Zadeh’s “computing with words” grounded in both language and reasoning. It also highlights some mathematical developments supporting this view. Lastly, it addresses a series of questions aimed at fostering new discussions and future research into this topic. All in all, this book represents an inspiring read for professors and researchers in computer science, and fuzzy logic in particular, as well as for psychologists, linguists and philosophers.

This book constitutes the post-conference proceedings of the 12th International Workshop on Fuzzy Logic and Applications, WILF 2018, held in Genoa, Italy, in September 2018. The 17 revised full papers and 9 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 26 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on fuzzy logic theory, recent applications of fuzzy logic, and fuzzy decision making. Also included are papers from the round table "Zadeh and the future of logic" and a tutorial.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Eighth Austrian Artificial Intelligence Conference, held in Linz, Austria, in June 1993. The focus of the conference was on "Fuzzy Logic in Artificial Intelligence". The volume contains abstracts of two invited talks and full versions of 17 carefully selected papers. The invited talks were: "The role of fuzzylogic and soft computing in the conception and design of intelligent systems" by Lotfi A. Zadeh, and "A contextual approach for AI systems development" by Irina V. Ezhkova. The contributed papers are grouped into sections on theoretical issues, machine learning, expert systems, robotics and control, applications to medicine, and applications to car driving. Additionally, the volume contains descriptions of the four workshops that took place during the conference.

Soft computing is a new, emerging discipline rooted in a group of technologies that aim to exploit the tolerance for imprecision and uncertainty in achieving solutions to complex problems. The principal components of soft computing are fuzzy logic, neurocomputing, genetic algorithms and probabilistic reasoning. This volume is a collection of up-to-date articles giving a snapshot of the current state of the field. It covers the whole expanse, from theoretical foundations to applications. The contributors are among the world leaders in the field. One of the most time-consuming tasks in clinical medicine is seeking the opinions of specialist colleagues. There is a pressure not only to make referrals appropriate but also to summarize the case in the language of the specialist. This book explains basic physiologic and pathophysiologic mechanisms of cardiovascular disease in a straightforward manner, gives guidelines as to when referral is appropriate, and, uniquely, explains what the specialist is likely to do. It is ideal for any hospital doctor, generalist, or even senior medical student who may need a cardiology opinion, or for that ma.

Proposes a dual picture of human lexical competence in which inferential and referential abilities are separate. Topics discussed in the text include classical issues in the philosophy of language and philosophy of mind such as semantic holism, dual-factor theories, publicness, and verificationism.
