Excerpt from On the Origin of the Laws of Nature This treatise is an extension of the 'Note on the Laws of Nature' at the end of the 6th edition of 'Astronomy without Mathematics, ' which at first related to Gravity alone. It also contains the substance of two lectures at the London Institution in 1878 and 9, which many persons wished to see printed. Some of the arguments are necessarily old, but were requisite to make the general argument complete as far as it goes. Possibly none of them may be new; for I never assume that anything is new merely because I have not seen it before or do not remember it. Nevertheless I believe that some of this reasoning will be new to most readers, if not to all, and that it is worth attending to. I have given it as concisely as possible, and with no more illustrations in any case than seemed necessary, out of the infinite number which nature affords, and of which a sufficient number may be read not only in Paley's 'Natural Theology' and the Bridgwater Treatises, but in many modern books which deny the only cause that will rationally account for their origin, as I have shown here. Excerpt from Thoughts on Natural Philosophy With a New Reading of Newton's First Law, and the Origin of Life Radium, then, consists of atoms of matter; these atoms are built up of corpuscles, and these corpuscles possibly of minute granules of matter moving and revolving at a tremendous speed; and some of the corpuscles disintegrate, and shoot forth from the atom minute portions of matter at enormous speed. Here we approach the discovery of what appears to be a great truth of far-reaching and immense importance. The things that give its character to Radium are the speed, weight, and movements of its atoms, corpuscles, and granules. Excerpt from The Origin and Nature of Life Whether the human mind be dealing with the problems of some branch of natural science, or constructing systems of ethics, philosophy, or religion, it is equally essential to clothe its thoughts in language derived from those things in the material world which appeal to the human senses. The extent and accuracy of our knowledge of external phenomena increase all the time, and it is this increase of knowledge which makes all science progressive. True religion apart from dogma is the sublimed essence of the knowledge of the highest things in the world, and in itself is never opposed to natural science; but when there is error in men's conceptions of religion or of natural science, then there may for a time appear to be a conflict. Excerpt from The Law of Nations: Or, Principles of the Law of Nature, Applied to the Conduct and Affairs of Nations and Sovereigns Many years have elapsed since the original work was pub lished, lon g before the invaluable decisions of Sir William Scott, Sir C. Robinson, and Sir J ohn N ichol, and other emi nent J udges in the Courts of Admiralty, and Prize and other Courts; and the last edition, upon which any care was be stowed, was published in A. D. 1797; since which time, and especially during the last general war, many most important rules respecting the Law of Nations were established. The object of the present Editor has, therefore, been to collect and condense, in numerous notes, the modem rules and decisions, and to fortify the positions in the text by references to other au thors of eminence, and by which he hopes that this edition will be found of more practical utility, without interfering with the text, or materially increasing its size. Excerpt from The Laws of Nature and the Laws of God: A Reply to Prof. Drummond The natural laws of the material universe will ever form a rich field for the exercise of man's natural reason and ingenuity, and each worker will be rewarded according to the lines on which he works, and the ability and perseverance with which he conducts that work. But the laws which hold good in the spiritual sphere of a man's being, and in that world where lies his future home, are not the product of man's reason and ingenuity. They must be revealed to him, and he becomes their recipient only according to his individual moral state, and not in virtue of his scientific or philosophical attainments. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Nature: A Systematic Treatise on the Causes and Laws of Natural Phenomena A work, like the present one, embracing the whole field of scientific knowledge, and venturing on speculations, which in this country have en gaged but little attention, must necessarily contain many errors let these be detected and corrected, and a step in advance will be secured: there must needs be many tentative hypotheses before that happy guess be made which shall cc-ordinate all our knowledge into a perfect system.
