Operads And Universal Algebra Proceedings Of The International Conference

The book aims to exemplify the recent developments in operad theory, in universal algebra and related topics in algebraic topology and theoretical physics. The conference has established a better connection between mathematicians working on operads (mainly the French team) and mathematicians working in universal algebra (primarily the Chinese team), and to exchange problems, methods and techniques from these two subject areas.

``Operads'' are mathematical devices which model many sorts of algebras (such as associative, commutative, Lie, Poisson, alternative, Leibniz, etc., including those defined up to homotopy, such as $A_{\infty}$-algebras). Since the notion of an operad appeared in the seventies in algebraic topology, there has been a renaissance of this theory due to the discovery of relationships with graph cohomology, Koszul duality, representation theory, combinatorics, cyclic cohomology, moduli spaces, knot theory, and quantum field theory. This renaissance was recognized at a special session ``Moduli Spaces, Operads, and Representation Theory'' of the AMS meeting in Hartford, CT (March 1995), and at a conference ``Operades et Algebre Homotopique'' held at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathematiques at Luminy, France (May-June 1995). Both meetings drew a diverse group of researchers. The authors have arranged the contributions so as to emphasize certain themes around which the renaissance of operads took place: homotopy algebra, algebraic topology, polyhedra and combinatorics, and applications to physics.

In August 1989, more than 700 Soviet algebraists and more than 200 foreign mathematicians convened in Novosibirsk in what was then the Soviet Union for the International Conference on Algebra. Dedicated to the memory of A.I. Mal'cev, the Russian algebraist and logician, the conference marked the first time since the International Congress of Mathematicians was held in Moscow in 1966 that Soviet algebraists could meet with a large number of their foreign colleagues. This volume contains the proceedings from this historic conference. Some of the Soviet contributors to this volume are not easily available from other sources. Some of the major figures in the field, including P.M. Cohn, P. Gabriel, N. Jacobson, E.R. Kolchin, and V. Platonov, contributed to this volume. The papers span a broad range of areas including groups, Lie algebras, associative and nonassociative rings, fields and skew fields, differential algebra, universal algebra, categories, combinatorics, logic, algebraic geometry, topology, and mathematical physics.

Operads are mathematical devices which describe algebraic structures of many varieties and in various categories. From their beginnings in the 1960s, they have developed to encompass such areas as combinatorics, knot theory, moduli spaces, string field theory and deformation quantization.

An interdisciplinary attempt to bring together physicists and linguists who use the same compositional mathematical methods. Although seemingly unrelated, due to the complexity and dynamics of the compound phenomena they aim to model, and also advances in their high level methods, these fields have come to share a common mathematical structure.

Surveying the most influential developments in the field, this proceedings reviews the latest research on algebras and their representations, commutative and non-commutative rings, modules, conformal algebras, and torsion theories.The volume collects stimulating discussions from world-renowned names including Tsit-Yuen Lam, Larry Levy, Barbara Osofsky, and Patrick Smith.

This volume is an outcome of the International Conference on Algebra in celebration of the 70th birthday of Professor Shum Kar-Ping which was held in Gadjah Mada University on 7?10 October 2010. As a consequence of the wide coverage of his research interest and work, it presents 54 research papers, all original and referred, describing the latest research and development, and addressing a variety of issues and methods in semigroups, groups, rings and modules, lattices and Hopf Algebra. The book also provides five well-written expository survey articles which feature the structure of finite groups by A Ballester-Bolinches, R Esteban-Romero, and Yangming Li; new results of Gr”bner-Shirshov basis by L A Bokut, Yuqun Chen, and K P Shum; polygroups and their properties by B Davvaz; main results on abstract characterizations of algebras of n-place functions obtained in the last 40 years by Wieslaw A Dudek and Valentin S Trokhimenko; Inverse semigroups and their generalizations by X M Ren and K P Shum. Recent work on cones of metrics and combinatorics done by M M Deza et al. is included.
