The United Nations, whose specialized agencies were the subject of an Appendix to the 1958 edition of Oppenheim's International Law: Peace, has expanded beyond all recognition since its founding in 1945.This volume represents a study that is entirely new, but prepared in the way that has become so familiar over succeeding editions of Oppenheim. The book casts light on the early development, challenges, and philosophy of international law and the international jurisprudential process. It brings together foreign, comparative, and international legislative ideas from 1600-1926. It quotes and contains works of some of the great legal theorists, including Gentili, Grotius, Selden, Zouche, Pufendorf, Bijnkershoek, Wolff, Vattel, Martens, Mackintosh, and Wheaton. Even today, almost a century after publication, many of the challenges remain. Therefore, the book is a great account of the history of international law and a reference for topical information.

He who would portray the future of international law must first of all be exact in his attitude towards its past and present. International law as the law of the international community of states, such as is the present-day conception of it, is of comparatively modern origin.
