A modifi cation oi vocal expression is made comparatively easy, if the mind Of the pupil can be fixed on the desired change. It is almost impossible to take the. Dullness and monotony out Of the voice of one who is totally deaf. It is likewise just about as difficult to improve the vocalization of a pupil who has no ear. The ear is the educator Of the muscles Of the throat and the other organs which control the voice. Let a teacher get his pupil into the habit of listening to his own vocaliza tion. Pu't each boy whose voice is hard and unpleasant, into the position of another person who is compelled to listen to that voice. Make him hear his Own defects; compel him to listen for improvement. Something can be done even with a pupil who cannot hear his own voice, even if not very much. With such a voice, the teacher's problem is much more dith cult. The best he can do is to suggest physical modifications in the position of the various parts Of the vocal apparatus, listen himself for improvement in the voice, and when he no tices that improvement, call the attention Of the pupil to the specific positions Of the organs which improve the tone. However, but few pupils will fail to recognize their own im provement Even if some make. No progress, the teacher must not be discouraged. Many a pupil who has no ear has been known to develop the power Of distinguishing between various notes, by careful attention to just such work as is outlined later in this manual. Excerpt from First Year English for High Schools The author has prepared this little volume with the hope that it may aid in producing more satisfactory results in first year English in high schools. The subject matter follows closely the outline of the New York 1905 Regents syllabus, and is designed to fur nish material for all the work required outside of the pre scribed texts. Certain features such as topical outlines, character sketches, narration, description, etc., which are on the whole new to first year work, have been made especially prominent, while drill in punctuation, letter writing, and sentence analysis has not been neglected. In punctuation the author has followed in the main the editing rules of the New York State Education Department, and in letter writing the forms current in official letters sent out by that department. While the work has been written with the needs of New York schools immediately in View, it is believed that it can be advantageously used for first year work in high schools throughout the country. Excerpt from The Teaching of High School English: June, 1914 Makers of high school courses of study and high school teachers have not been unmindful of these considerations. More of the pupils' time during the high school period is devoted to English than to any other subject, and this independent of the fact that every recitation is, in a sense, a recitation in English. In the large academic high schools there are more teachers of English than of any other subject. How far the results of the teaching justify the time and energy expended is not easily determined. It is not to be denied that results are not always what either the public or the teachers themselves could wish. In this connection there should be taken into account the forces at work outside of school which impair the results of English teaching, and which seriously handicap the work of teachers in this subject as the work of no other body of high school teachers is handicapped. Some of these forces are the prevailing low standards of spoken English in many homes and in many communities, the dislike of a large number of pupils for written composition of any sort, their inability to see the relation of good English to the practical affairs of the world, and the enormous amount of cheap periodical matter which the news stands offer in tempting colors or pictorial adornment to old and young alike.
