The Lord's Prayer holds an honored place in the worship and devotional practices of countless Christians around the world. People of every ethnic background, denominational affiliation, and theological leaning pray to "Our Father who art in heaven." But what if there's more to it than we think? Our Father Who Aren't in Heaven takes a decidedly this-worldly approach to the prayer, and seeks to understand what Jesus meant to teach his original disciples--and us--through this radical manifesto of the kingdom of God. In these pages, Robert S. Turner presents a political reading of the prayer and explores how we can encounter through it a God who has left the divine hammock empty and cast God's lot with humanity and the rest of creation. A renewed understanding of the prayer may have the capacity to transform the world. These subversive reflections on the Lord's Prayer may have the capacity to transform the reader as well.

My sister and I uncovered a fascinating story about our father and his life of crime. Thirteen years after his death, we were contacted by an adoptee, age thirty, searching for her birth parents. The limited information she provided matched our dad. We were puzzled because at the time of her conception, our father was in prison just ten miles away. We requested his visitor's list and found a female visited during that time. When we broke this news to the adoptee, she was mortified and cancelled a DNA test. In the process of determining if we were siblings, we discovered our father's criminal life, before he met our mother. Going back to his roots, we were surprised to learn our father and his sister were abandoned as toddlers. They were left on the porch of relatives. He grew up to become a notorious opportunist whose crimes netted more money than many legendary outlaws. He once said, "I could tell you stories that would sell a book!" Unfortunately, we never asked him to elaborate.

There is an impressive consensus among New Testament scholars that the Kingdom of God was the principal theme of all that Jesus taught. The Gospel about the Kingdom of God is actually the New Testament name for the Christian Message of salvation. Yet today we hear little or nothing in public evangelism about the Gospel of the Kingdom. Jesus has been divorced from his own Gospel. Anthony Buzzard contends that traditional Christianity has lost its grip on the Messianism of the Bible that Jewish theme which Gentiles found, and still find, unfamiliar. If the various denominations are to find unity in a common belief in the Bible, it will have to be by a return to the Messianic Jesus and His Kingdom Gospel. No theme could be more heartening in our distracted world than the hope of a better world coming on earth when Jesus returns to take over the reins of world government. Subtle forces from the world of pagan philosophy have worked to make basic apostolic teachings unclear to the churchgoing public. The Bible read in its own Hebrew, Messianic context comes alive as a thrilling document inspiring hope for a resolution of all the worlds problems and offering frail humans the prospect of living not only for a thousand years, but forever.

Lives are transformed by devoted commitment to the themes of the Lord's Prayer. The Lord's Prayer presents a summary of the basic teachings of Jesus Christ on prayer. The prayer: Makes holiness attractive. Unites us to our heavenly Father. Contains many of the great doctrines of Christianity. Is simple in its appeal. Is profound in its content and teaching. We have repeated this prayer so many times, we don't think about the words. Therein lies the danger-we hardly know what we are saying. This book encourages all Christians to recapture the glory of the kingdom of God revealed in our Lord's model, and when we do, a miracle happens. It is this: God joins us, and we have a divine conversation leading to a divine relationship. Deep down inside this prayer, Jesus calls us to experience the glory, power, love, and majesty of God.

Is it okay to call God mother? John Cooper's Our Father in Heaven explores this question, offering a critique of inclusive language for God. Cooper closely examines how Scripture addresses God and points out the critical differences between the Bible's gendered language for God and inclusive language. In addition, he encourages the church to follow the Bible's model of using feminine imagery in reference to God. In a chapter titled "The Motherly Touch of Our Heavenly Father," he provides specific suggestions for making appropriate use of feminine imagery for God in public worship, church education, evangelism, pastoral counseling, personal devotions, scholarship, and art.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Pope Francis illuminates the Lord’s Prayer, the most important prayer in all of Christianity, offering readers a guide to living a life of meaning, purpose and strength. In conversation with Father Marco Pozza, a theologian and prison chaplain in Padua, Italy, Pope Francis offers unprecedented insight into Jesus’s most profound words, as he explores the importance of embracing social justice, benevolence, and forgiveness in our hearts and minds. Looking to address the concerns and hopes of today’s men and women, Our Father: Reflections on the Lord’s Prayer is a guide to living a life full of meaning, purpose, and strength. “We need courage to pray the Our Father,” writes Pope Francis, “to truly believe that God is the Father who accompanies us, forgives us, gives us bread, is attentive to all that we ask, clothes us even better than the flowers of the field. To believe is a big risk.” Challenging this doubt and fear, he issues a call to “dare . . . help oneanother to dare.” With excerpts from some of the Pontiff’s most cherished teachings, this beautiful work offers words of encouragement and inspiration for all who are seeking hope and direction in our often tumultuous world.
