Berniece Bernay (BB) is living proof that no matter what our challenges in life, God can be a source of undying strength. As she grew up the victim of constant teasing, BB wondered if she would ever make friends. Unfortunately when she turned the tender age of thirteen and dropped out of school, BBs life began spiraling even further downward into darkness. As adolescence angst hung over her like a shadow, BB discloses how her struggles, inner-turmoil, and heartache led her to feel a sense of hopelessness and that her life had no direction. When a forced encounter one night led BB to finally seek medical care, she received shocking news that changed everything: she was pregnant. Shamed and depressed, BB details her subsequent journey on a dark path filled with desperate choices to the surprising birth of twins. As she shares a personal story of how the Lord eventually healed her with help from applicable scripture, BB provides hope to anyone suffering that God is only a heartbeat away to all who call on Him and believe in Him. Out of Darkness into Marvelous Light details one womans poignant quest to find happiness, fulfillment, and inner-peace in a complicated world through Gods grace and love.

Do you long to know your unique purpose? Do you feel you have a calling but wonder how to fulfill it? As we pursue a sense of purpose and scramble to be the ones chosen for internships, graduate schools, marriages, careers, or some special honor, we often tie our identity to people, places, and clear plans that leave us frustrated and unfulfilled. We feel like we’re missing the life we’re supposed to live and we somehow veered off course. We ask questions like, “Is this God’s plan for me? How do I know? What is His plan, anyway?” What if Scripture not only answered these questions but also taught us an entirely new way of living? Instead of waiting for the perfect person, place, or plan, what if we lived, above all else, as chosen for Christ? Chosen for Christ invites you to step into the life you’ve been missing. You were chosen for a Person, not a plan. Now it’s time to live out your calling to: worship Jesus live as His treasured possession belong to a new household become like Jesus display God’s power complete the good works He designed for you live differently from the rest of the world In a world fixated on personal purpose and impact, Chosen for Christ presents a new way to think about calling. Each chapter includes discussion questions that will help women embrace their identity as chosen ones and step into a new way of living each new day. Chosen for Christ completes Heather Holleman’s vivid verbs trilogy, which also includes Seated with Christ and Guarded by Christ. It works wonderfully as a stand-alone book or as a powerful companion to her previous works. It also provides an expansion of ideas that appear briefly in Holleman’s devotional Included in Christ.

A life application exegesis of a book of the Bible is different and often hard to find, especially of one of the Epistles. Life application is not a historical document, nor is it a purely theological writing. It is the taking of the Word of God and applying to the daily life of the believer in order that the Christian may “live Christ” in his walk so that those around him may see God “lived out” and thus come to know him. As the believer becomes more adept at doing this, the Holy Spirit will be able to place that believer in more and more circumstances where he can use the believer, often without the believer even knowing that he is being used. It becomes natural to the believer. Jesus puts it this way. He said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit.” All we have to do is hang in there. Jesus does the rest through his Holy Spirit. That is what life-application exegesis is all about. It is about living experiences of life with Christ so we may learn what Jesus wants to do in our lives to touch others. Just think—Jesus wants to use us to touch others. Blows your mind, doesn’t it?

Imagine a little girl that lived for many years in terror and fear. She would experience sexual abuse, rape and other forms of abuse. The word normal was not in her vocabulary. Therefore she ultimately began to make unhealthy choices for herself and her children. Feeling as though she had inflicted her trauma on her children seemed to worsen the guilt. Mavis seemed to function in crisis. She would live many years before finding the Truth. Eventually Mavis would find forgiveness and learn how to forgive others. Through this forgiveness the Lord would restore relationships and show her the meaning of complete joy. Only He can restore abuse to preservation and respect, terror to joy and happiness, fear to courage and bravery, trauma to healing, crisis to peace, guilt to innocence, shame to honor and respect, and turn your sorrow to joy. The past does not define who we are or our destiny for the present or future. The abuse is what happened to me, but it is not who I am. I have finally found my true identity.
