Palomar

Rising 6,140 feet into the sky, Palomar Mountain is one of the highest peaks in San Diego County. It is best known as the location for the iconic Palomar Observatory and its giant 200-inch Hale telescope. But since the mid-1800s, this mile-high forested oasis in the Southern California desert has also been a haven to rustlers, ranchers, and recluses, as well as practitioners of high science and promoters of extraterrestrials. Early Luiseño Indians were the mountain's first inhabitants, and ever since then, it has been a special place with a magical attraction to many looking for inspiration and solitude. Today Palomar Mountain is home to a small, thriving community with an eclectic mix of about 300 citizens, some of whom are descendants from the original 19th-century pioneer families.

Each of the characters in 'The Palomar Paradox' deals with the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) in their own way. As in real life, some believe; others don't want you to believe. 'The Palomar Paradox' sees Luper Beauchamps, a brilliant scientist, back in an astronomical observatory searching for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. He finds himself working with Leila Keiler, a young student recovering from leukaemia, and Karina Lowenhaupt, an experienced astronomer. Other characters include, Trent Foresyth, a senior Pentagon official, and his intern, Rihanna Sorensen. They are charged chiefly with quashing all reports of, and evidence for, extraterrestrial activity.

New Tales of Old Palomar is Gilbert Hernandez’s much-anticipated return to the small Central American town of Palomar, more than a decade after his last “Heartbreak Soup” story. Originally released as a three-issue magazine series in the acclaimed international “Ignatz” format, New Tales Old Palomar is finally collected into one handsome book. What is the baby’s link to the giant stone idols that stand outside the small town...?
