Advances in Computer Assisted Learning contains selected proceedings from the CAL Symposium on Computer Assisted Learning held at the University of Nottingham in the UK in 1985. This book reviews advances in computer-assisted learning in the areas of curriculum development, visually handicapped and disabled students, project work in schools, television, viewdata and video applications, database applications, and engineering education and training. This monograph has 35 chapters and opens with a discussion on the computing aspects of interactive video, focusing on the design and production of the software used to control the videodisc developed by the Open University in the UK. The next chapter illustrates a variety of case studies whereby local viewdata has been exploited by both teachers and their pupils in different parts of Europe. Attention then turns to the use of computer-assisted communication in the education of the visually impaired; the use of microcomputers in teaching electronics; and theoretical considerations in selecting software for language arts. This text will be of interest to educators and policymakers who want to implement computer technology in the classroom.

What Shall We Do Now? by Dorothy Canfield Fisher is an interesting collection of games for adults and children. Fisher's games are interesting in that they instill a sense of know-how in young children as preparation for the broader world. Excerpt: "In the following pages, which have something to say concerning most of the situations in which children find themselves, at home or in the country, out of doors or in, alone or in the company, a variety of answers will be found. No subject can be said to be exhausted, but the book is perhaps large enough. Everything which it contains has been indexed so clearly that a reader ought to be able to find what he wants in a moment."

The Bullring: A Classroom Experiment in Moral Education describes a way in which the principle of encouraging children to find out for themselves and to conduct their experiments with the raw material of common everyday objects—so well understood in the earlier years of schooling—may be adapted to help older children understand the world of persons. The Bullring is a free-discussion lesson; in it the children push the desks to one side, and, with the teacher, sit around in a circle facing one another. Their task is to study their behavior as it occurs and the teacher's task is to help them to do this. What distinguishes the Bullring from an ordinary discussion period is the freedom of students to say what they like and just about do what they like. The Bullring tries to provide a safe area in which young adolescents could find out for themselves what sort of persons they and their friends and their enemies were in relation to one another. It thus attempts to extend the principle of free discovery into the realm of personal relationships, to help children to discover themselves and to discover a morality by which to live.
