Many have heard the legend of the Jersey Devil of the Pine Barrens, but what about his relative in Somerset County? The Great Swamp Devil was captured by an American Patriot, terrorized a Victorian family and was rediscovered by Depression-era adventurers. Clearly, Somerset County has a rich oral tradition filled with a folklore all its own. An encounter with the Dead River Witch of Liberty Corner is linked with the unsolved disappearance of a nine-year-old girl. Alleged Revolutionary War spy John Honeyman never stopped telling tall tales about himself, even after his death. The Pluckemin orbs--more than six thousand years old--frightened Native Americans, intrigued artists and still defy explanation. Discover these and other legends from Somerset County, New Jersey.

Kentucky has more miles of running water than any of the lower forty-eight contiguous states. With all of that water, there is a lot of fog that is created to seriously limit the visibility, but to strongly affect the imagination. With clearing skies, light winds, and moist ground, strange sights are often seen and regularly reported. These stories have been told time after time in Eastern Kentucky, so I have wrapped them into a single book for my readers to enjoy. The stories are riding on a fictional vehicle called PESO, which stands for Phenomenological Event Study Offices. This fictional organization has the assignment of studying ghosts and capturing their images on special infrared cameras. PESO's final report goes to a fictional governor for the State of Kentucky who wants to manipulate those unsuspecting spirits by building new state parks around their haunting sights. That's where the trouble begins.

This collection of stories and twice-told tales from around Somerset lifts the shrouds off many new and legendary hauntings, including some spine-tingling experienes as recounted to the author by Somerset townsfolk, villagers and visitors. Researching historical and contemporary sources. Haunted Somerset reveals its uniquely supernatural heritage from a coffin on the road, eerie Bath, the phantoms of Sedgemoor, Dunster Castle's ghostly sightings, headless horsemen, animal apparitions and Exmoor spectres ... and if these are not enough to curdle your nervous system, a screaming skull and the grisly haunted associated with a curate murderered by some of his parishoners who was rumoured to have been cannibalised!

There has been an upsurge in books, television programmes, films and websites exploring the reality or otherwise of the spirit world. Not since the founding of The Ghost Club in 1862 and the Society for Psychical Research in 1882 has ghost hunting been so popular. Television and the internet, in particular, have fueled this new level of interest, creating a modern media phenomenon that spans the globe. But while the demand for information is high, good information remains scarce. A Brief Guide to Ghost Hunting leads us through the process of ghost hunting, from initially weighing the first report, to choosing equipment, and investigating and identifying the phenomena, with an analysis of the best places to go looking, methods of contacting the spirit world, how to explain paranormal activity and, crucially, how to survive the encounter. However, it is also a book about ghost hunting itself, drawing on 130 years of research in the cavernous archives of the Society for Psychical Research and even older history to find the earliest ghost stories. A Ghost Hunting Survey makes use of interviews with those billing themselves as ghost hunters to find out their views, motivations and experiences. New and original research makes use of statistics to map the nebulous world of apparitions while a Preliminary Survey of Hauntings offers an analysis of 923 reported phenomena from 263 locations across the UK. This is, as far as possible, an objective presentation of ghosts and ghost hunting. It is no wonder that mainstream science largely refuses to deal with the subject: it is too complicated. Without trying to convince you of any viewpoint, this book is intended to help you understand more.
