Partial Differential Equations And Their Applications Proceedings Of The Conference

This volume reports the recent progress in linear and nonlinear partial differential equations, microlocal analysis, singular partial differential operators, spectral analysis and hyperfunction theory.

International Conference on Differential Equations contains the proceedings of an International Conference on Differential Equations held at the University of Southern California, on September 3-7, 1974. The papers review advances in the qualitative-analytic theory of differential equations and highlight three broad areas: analytic theory (singular perturbations), qualitative theory (boundary value problems), and mathematical control theory (variational methods). Comprised of 82 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on continuous extensions, their construction, and their application in the theory of differential equations. The reader is then introduced to an approach to boundary control of partial differential equations based on the theory of semigroups of operators; lower closure and existence theorems in optimal control; and a nonlinear oscillation theorem. Subsequent chapters focus on matrices of rational functions; asymptotic integration of linear differential systems; solutions near bifurcated steady states; and geometric views in existence theory. This monograph will be of interest to students and instructors of mathematics.

The volume contains carefully selected papers presented at the International Conference on Differential & Difference Equations and Applications held in Ponta Delgada – Azores, from July 4-8, 2011 in honor of Professor Ravi P. Agarwal. The objective of the gathering was to bring together researchers in the fields of differential & difference equations and to promote the exchange of ideas and research. The papers cover all areas of differential and difference equations with a special emphasis on applications.

This volume consists of 24 papers submitted for publication by the invited speakers of the IFIP International Conference on Stochastic Partial Differential Equations and their Ap- plications. Most of them are research papers, however, a few surveys written by world renowed experts are also included. The aim of the conference was to bring together mathematici- ans, physicists and engineers representing academic as well as industrial fields, interested in the theory and applica- tions of SPDE's. The field of SPDE's is one of the most dy- namically developing areas at the cross roads of several sciences. It is especially attractive for many because of its interdisciplinary character and enormous richness ofal- ready existing as well as potential applications. There were about one hundred participants registered for the conferen- ce. With rare exceptions, all of the most active researchers in the field of SPDE's throughout the world were present at the conference. The main topics for discussion at the confe- rence were: non-linear SPDE's and Markov property for random fields, modern stochastic calculuses, numerical and asympto- tic methods for SPDE's, applications of SPDE's with emphasis onnon-linear filtering, stochastic control and statistical fluid dynamics.

These conference proceedings include papers by a number of experts with a common interest in differential equations and their application in physical and biological systems. Topics covered include direct and inverse electromagnetic scattering techniques, spatial epidemic models, wound healing, chemotaxis and reaction-diffusion equations, dynamics and stability of thin liquid films, and a contemporary formulation of symmetric linear differential equations.

Lax and Nirenberg are two of the most distinguished mathematicians of our times. Their work on partial differential equations (PDEs) over the last half-century has dramatically advanced the subject and has profoundly influenced the course of mathematics. A huge part of the development in PDEs during this period has either been through their work, motivated by it or achieved by their postdocs and students. A large number of mathematicians honored these two exceptional scientists in a week-long conference in Venice (June 1996) on the occasion of their 70th birthdays. This volume contains the proceedings of the conference, which focused on the modern theory of nonlinear PDEs and their applications. Among the topics treated are turbulence, kinetic models of a rarefied gas, vortex filaments, dispersive waves, singular limits and blow-up solutions, conservation laws, Hamiltonian systems and others. The conference served as a forum for the dissemination of new scientific ideas and discoveries and enhanced scientific communication by bringing together such a large number of scientists working in related fields. THe event allowed the international mathematics community to honor two of its outstanding members.

As a satellite conference of the 1998 International Mathematical Congress and part of the celebration of the 650th anniversary of Charles University, the Partial Differential Equations Theory and Numerical Solution conference was held in Prague in August, 1998. With its rich scientific program, the conference provided an opportunity for almost 200 participants to gather and discuss emerging directions and recent developments in partial differential equations (PDEs). This volume comprises the Proceedings of that conference. In it, leading specialists in partial differential equations, calculus of variations, and numerical analysis present up-to-date results, applications, and advances in numerical methods in their fields. Conference organizers chose the contributors to bring together the scientists best able to present a complex view of problems, starting from the modeling, passing through the mathematical treatment, and ending with numerical realization. The applications discussed include fluid dynamics, semiconductor technology, image analysis, motion analysis, and optimal control. The importance and quantity of research carried out around the world in this field makes it imperative for researchers, applied mathematicians, physicists and engineers to keep up with the latest developments. With its panel of international contributors and survey of the recent ramifications of theory, applications, and numerical methods, Partial Differential Equations: Theory and Numerical Solution provides a convenient means to that end.

Presents lectures given at the 1995 Annual Seminar of the Canadian Mathematical Society on Partial Differential Equations and Their Applications held at the University of Toronto in June 1995.
