Partners In Planning

This handbook explores two guiding questions – how can university-community partnerships in planning education work, and how can they be transformative? University-community partnerships – often referred to as service-learning or community-engaged teaching and learning – are traditionally based on a collaborative relationship between an academic partner and a community-based partner, in which students from the academic partner work within the community on a project. Transformational approaches to university-community partnerships are approaches that develop and sustain mutually beneficial collaborations where knowledge is co-created and new ways of knowing and doing are discovered. This edited volume examines a variety of university-community partnerships in planning education, from a number of different perspectives, with a focus on transformative models. The authors explore broader theoretical issues, including topics relating to pedagogy, planning theory, and curriculum; along with more practical topics relating to best practices, logistics, institutional support, outcome measures, and the various forms these partnerships can take – all through an array of case studies. The authors, which include academics, professional practitioners, academic practitioners, and students, bring an incredible depth and breadth of knowledge and experience from across the globe – Australia, Canada, Chile, Europe (including Germany, Spain, Slovakia, and Sweden), India, Jamaica, South Korea, and the United States.

Partners in Planning is about how professionals can work with local lay people in an equal partnership to support development programmes, particularly in the areas of health and education. It discusses the importance of generating information, encouraging active participation by those benefiting from the development programmes, and the subsequent empowerment of these people to give them the experience and confidence needed to influence the decisions that affect their daily lives. In particular, this book explores the idea and practice of empowerment through the way information is obtained and used.

Human and organizational factors have a substantial impact on the performance of planning and scheduling processes. Despite widespread and advanced decision support systems, human decision makers are still crucial to improve the operational performance in manufacturing industries. In this text, the state of the art in this area is discussed by experts from a wide variety of engineering and social science disciplines. Moreover, recent results from collaborative studies and a number of field cases are presented. The text is targeted at researchers and graduate students, but is also particularly useful for managers, consultants, and system developers to better understand how human performance can be advanced.

This program is based on the conviction that "churches flourish best when they reach beyond their own walls, and neighborhoods can benefit from the resources and leadership vested in local churches." It aims to: stimulate greater involvement of religious institutions in community revitalization, create new religious community partnerships, strengthen community ministries, and attract new sources of funding for such initiatives. 28 religious institutions and community based organizations received grants and technical assistance. This report presents evaluation findings from the first year of funded activity. Illustrated.
