Patriotic Correctness

After 9/11, rightists capitalized on an atmosphere of fear and confusion to resuscitate the “culture wars” of the 1990s and once again targeted the academy. Using tactics reminiscent of the McCarthy era, religious firebrands, militant neoconservatives, and free market fundamentalists engaged in a concerted effort to silence voices critical of the ‘war on terror’ and liken legitimate dissent to treason. During the first decade of the new millennium one of the most popular features in the community paper The Wilmington Spectator was the "Visit with Uncle Richard" series. Written by Spectator columnist and editor Pat Gibbs, the Uncle Richard character was based on Pat's actual uncle who nicknamed him Bubby. The stories and adventures of Uncle Richard are legendary in the city of Wilmington, Delaware. Though Uncle Richard left us some years ago, his "favorite and only nephew" kept his memory alive after Uncle Richard's passing. The Wilmington Spectator shut down its presses in 2007, but Uncle Richard's fans have never forgotten him. The moment came at a funeral for a soldier. This book explores the resurgence of rural horror following the events of 9/11, as a number of filmmakers, inspired by the films of the 1970s, moved away from the characteristic industrial and urban settings of apocalyptic horror, to return to American heartland horror.
