During the 20th century Europe has experienced three major periods of movements: around the time of the First and Second World Wars and in the last decade. The analysis presented in this book is based on the statistics contained in the Eurostat international migration database. The period of analysis is, broadly, from the early to mid 1980s to the present day. The report provides a detailed analysis of the foreign population in the EU. It is concluded that the large majority of the these foreign populations came from middle-low income countries. The report also discusses the issue of protection and asylum, with analysis of the characteristics and mechanisms inherent in Europe's asylum regime. It is stated that a substantial number of potential asylum seekers is probably hidden in illegal immigration. The southern EU states have emerged as new countries of immigration.

"Since the end of the cold war, international migration has come to be seen as one of the most pressing issues facing Europe in the 1990s. This study takes as its starting-point the growing concern among policy-makers and the public throughout Western Europe over the issue of migration. The author places the current migration debate within a comparative perspective, in its global and historical context, outlining current broad trends in 'economic' migration, and providing some pointers to how these trends have affected Western Europe in recent decades." "The analysis highlights elements of continuity and change in states' involvement in the migration process, a theme expanded in the context of the migration and migrant 'integration' policies pursued by both sending and receiving states. This provides a backdrop for a critical examination of current moves towards the harmonization of migration policy within the EC and wider groupings in Western Europe. The author raises questions about possible future responses to the migration challenge and asks, ultimately, what is the nature of that challenge?"--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Patterns of Migration in Central Europe brings together new material on migration in the region: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In the last ten years, these countries have changed from being countries of emigration to countries of immigration. As the next candidates for membership to the European Union, migration has become a particularly important topic for these countries. This book is designed as a key text for those interested in the development of the region and in European migration more generally.
