Paving The Way For Sustainable Consumption And Production

"At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, sustainable consumption and production (SCP) was recognized as an overarching objective of an prerequisite to sustainable development. Ten years after the Rio Conference, world leaders signed the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) and agreed to "encourage and promote the development of a 10 Year Framework of programmes in support of regional and national initiatives to accelerate the shift towards sustainable consumption and production". The Marrakech Process was launched in 2003 in order to respond to this call. Since its establishment, the global, multi-stakeholder process has supported the implementation of SCP in all regions and has played a key role in providing inputs for the elaboration of the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, to be considered by the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) during its 2010-2011 implementation cycle. This report presents the activities and outcomes of the Marrakech Process and provides some highlights and lessons learned. It examines the key outcomes of the Process from three main perspectives: The work of the seven Marrakech Task Forces: Cooperation with Africa, Education for Sustainable Consumption, Sustainable Buildings and Construction, Sustainable Lifestyles, Sustainable Products, Sustainable Public Procurement, Sustainable Tourism -- The activities undertaken at the regional level: in Africa, West Asia, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, and North America -- Actions at the national and local levels. The review includes case studies highlighting concrete projects and good practices implemented by the Marrakech Process worldwide. In reviewing all these actions it is clear that the Marrakech Process constitutes a global effort in which all stakeholders are taking action, coming together to build cooperation and support the transition towards sustainable consumption and production. It demonstrates a clear global commitment to SCP, paving the way for an up-scaled and more formal effort to accelerate the transition towards resource efficient economies and sustainable lifestyles."--P. Economic growth and increasing population impose long-term risks to the environment and society. Approaches to address the impact of consumption and production on bio-diversity loss, resource availability, climate change, and mounting waste problems on land and in seas have yet not proven to be successful. This book is an edited volume that focuses on international norms and normative change in some of the key areas of sustainable human development. This is an important and timely topic since the international community adopted a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September of 2015. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will guide international development efforts over the next fifteen years. For this reason, developing a deeper understanding of the SDGs, the international norms that underpin them, and any normative change they represent is vital for students, scholars, and development practitioners and professionals. This volume is designed to provide an account of some of the normative debates and normative change that the process of developing a set of SDGs has entailed. Its goal is to assess the origins, nature, extent, and implications of normative change in the context of the post-2015 development agenda. It also evaluates the extent to which the SDGs represent a significant change from established development norms and practices.

DESIGN ECOVISIONS – Volume 2: Research on design and sustainability in Brazil presents the results of the panel discussions of the 6o Simpósio Brasileiro de Design Sustentável + International Symposium on Sustainable Design (SBDS + ISSD 2017), held in 2017 in Belo Horizonte. The event aimed at gathering researchers, students and design professionals, as well as representatives of the productive and governmental sectors, who seek to discuss the current and future framework of design in relation to various aspects of sustainable development. It was based on dynamics for exchange, sharing, and collaboration among design researchers engaged with sustainability, previously experienced in the 5th edition of the symposium, held in 2015 in Rio de Janeiro, and which results were re¬corded in the first volume of this series. The theme of Volume 2 is the tripod of sustainability, and it is addressed by reflecting on "design, territory and culture"; "social innovation and collaborative models"; "ecomaterials"; "environmental labelling"; "design and craftsmanship"; and "circular economy". The chapters reflect the researchers' contributions and their discussions, and are organized in three parts. The first encompasses design in the context of sustainable consump¬tion and production, focusing on materials and environmental labelling. The second seeks to discuss design and emerging approaches through the concepts of local production, territory and collaborative models. The third part consists of reports of experiences from the event or from design practice. Thus, combining theory and practice, this book seeks to materialize the meeting as a relevant event for the area, and a fruitful space for debates on the theme of sustainability allied to design in Brazil.
