Excerpt from Pearls of the Pacific It is worth much to one to rest through days like these; to feel that the cares, and perhaps the sorrows, of every-day life are, for a time at all events, losing their sting; that you are leaving behind the dust of the world's highways, with their oceans of grief and tiny islets of human happiness; and that you are drifting in delicious leisure to some long-wished - for haven, which even yet borders on the realms of dream - land. Excerpt from Pearls of the Pacific: Being Sketches of Missionary Life and Work in Samoa and Other Islands in the South Seas Y aim in Pearls of the Pacific is to give boys and girls a clear, true picture of life, as well as Mission work, in the South Seas. My own experience of this life and work was all too Short it was limited to three brief, happy years in Samoa, and therefore my main purpose has been to write of what I have seen. That, and that alone, accounts for Samoa filling so large a Space in the following pages. My best thanks are due to my friends and former colleagues, the Revs. J. E. Newell, Of Malua, and Walter Hackett, formerly of Apia, for much valuable and suggestive information (indeed, the book could not have been brought up to date without the help of the former) also to my school-fellow and college friend, the Rev. L. H. Gaunt, m.a., the London Missionary Society's Editor, for much kindly editorial assistance. I wish also to express my deep indebtedness to Mr. A. Tattersall, Of Apia, and my friend and former colleague, Mr. H. S. Griffin, of the l.m.s. Printing Press, Malua, for the use Of their photographs. Excerpt from The Problem of the Pacific The author of The Problem of the Pacific, a real son of the great ocean, has in this volume so thoroughly sifted what has been written in recent years on the political aspects of it that the present writer would have declined from paucity, of knowledge to respond to the request to write a foreword to this very useful book had it not been that he has spent twenty-eight years of his life in the Pacific, and couse quently is deeply interested in that part of the world, where he has many thousands of friends of different races to whose welfare he can never be indifferent.
