Performing the Visual explores the practice of wall painting in China from a new perspective. Relying on rare, virtually unpublished drawings on Buddhist themes from a long-hidden medieval library in western China, the author analyzes the painters' pictorial strategies. She also examines the financial accounting of Buddhist temples, providing practical information that ninth- and tenth-century critics ignored: how artists were paid and when, the temple's role as mediator between patrons and artists, and the way painters functioned outside the monastic system, working in guilds and secular academies affiliated with local government. Based on the careful study of hundreds of inaccessible wall paintings at Dunhuang, arguably Asia's largest and most important Buddhist site, the author shows that although critics celebrated spontaneous feats with brush and ink, artists at Dunhuang were heavily dependent on concrete tools such as sketches in the preparation of wall painting.

Dante on View opens an important new dimension in Dante studies: for the first time a collection of essays analyses the presence of the Italian Medieval poet Dante Alighieri in the visual and performing arts from the Middle Ages to the present day. The essays in this volume explore the image of Dante emerging in medieval illuminated manuscripts and later ideological and nostalgic uses of the poet. The volume also demonstrates the rich diversity of projects inspired by the Commedia both as an overall polysemic structure and as a repository of scenes, which generate a repertoire for painters, actors and film-makers. In its original multimediality, Dante's Commedia stimulates the performance of readers and artists working in different media from manuscript to stage, from ballet to hyperinstruments, from film to television. Through such a variety of media, the reception of Dante in the visual and performing arts enriches our understanding of the poet and of the arts represented at key moments of formal and structural change in the European cultural world.

Ecoarts practice is evolving quickly as a practice. While much of it is made by individual artists working alone, artists are increasingly combining into multi-artist collectives, and collaborating with scientists, sustainability professionals, industry or the community to develop artworks with quite far-reaching effects. This book describes an extraordinary range of artistic practices pitched to encourage people to adopt pro-environmental behaviours by provoking, persuading, providing information, creating empathy for nature or by being built into sustainability practices themselves. It brings together 28 contributors who examine different roles of the arts in encouraging pro-environmental behaviour. There is a wide range of practitioners represented here, including visual and performing artists, sustainability professionals, social researchers, environmental educators, research students and academics. The contributors to this book are united in believing that the arts are vital in promoting pro-environmental behavior in the way that they are practiced, but also in the connections they make to ecology, science and Indigenous culture.

Writing in the early nineteenth century, the French traveler and cleric Abbé Huc exclaimed: "There is, perhaps, not a people in the world who carry so far their taste and passion for theatrical entertainments as the Chinese.” This taste and passion for the theater was not restricted to the stage, but permeated the visual and material world of everyday life from the village to the court. The visual spectacle of this theater is well known, displayed primarily through colorful costumes, props, and face painting. What is less known is the extent to which operatic characters and stories were favored as pictorial and decorative motifs across the full spectrum of visual mediums, from courtly scroll paintings, popular New Year prints, illustrated woodblock books and painted fans to carved utensils, ceramics, textiles, and dioramas.
