Persevere

Perseverance is designed to offer guidance, challenge, clarity and consolation to all the people doing their work day - by - day. The topics are not the usual inspiring, feel good, rah - rah messages. Instead, Wheatley focuses on the situations, feelings, and challenges that can, over time, cause us to give up or lose our way. Perseverance is a discipline - it's a day - by - day decision not to give up. Therefore, we have to notice the moments when we feel lost or overwhelmed or betrayed or exhausted and note how we respond to them. And we have to notice the rewarding times, when we experience the joy of working together on something hard but worthwhile, when we realize we've made a small difference. Every essay names a behavior or dynamic, puts it into a broader human or timeless perspective, and offers ways for the reader to either live with or transcend that dynamic. Wheatley wants people to be able to see themselves, their situation, and to assume responsibility for changing the situation or their reaction to it if it's one that troubles them. (There deliberately are no examples of other people - the reader is the example; their personal experience is the only case material.) The content (essays and quotes) is drawn from many spiritual traditions and diverse cultures. The book is deeply grounded spiritually and also quite inclusive - accessing human experience and wisdom from many sources. Both this grounding and inclusiveness support the essential message - human being throughout time and history have persevered. We're just the most recent ones to face these challenges.

Have you ever been in a physical or spiritual storm? Well, they are both similar. A physical storm is whereas there are dark clouds, thunder and lightning and the sun refuse to shine. There is also rain, and I mean rain, rain, and then more rain. A spiritual storm has some of the same characteristics. The most highly visible difference is that soon the physical storm has passed. A spiritual storm, one may have to weather it much longer. It wont be over until God say that it is. During this time we must praise, pray, and persevere. I’m a high school dropout. I never made it past the ninth grade. The reason why is complicated and will be explored throughout the telling of my story of perseverance. When I was fifteen years old, I dropped out of high school. At that time, I had only earned one-half of gym credit. My life’s story of is a journey of survival, resilience, and redemption. It’s a testimony that your beginning doesn’t have to set the tone for your entire life. At the writing of this book, I am a newly retired sixty-five-year-old Salvation Army officer and an ordained elder. As an adult at age thirty, I earned my GED. Many years later, I earned my bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and doctorate and became a board-certified chaplain. It wasn’t easy, and it didn’t come without sacrifice. I had to take several prep classes to prepare for the GED test. Later, to get into college, I took several years of non-credited classes. During college, I struggled because I wasn’t a good speller. I couldn’t take notes. Plus dealing with a lower self-image and racism while growing up didn’t help. In addition, having a young wife, three children, school full-time, full-time work, and running my own carpet and upholstery cleaning service, added additional pressure.
