Perspectives In Biotechnology And Applied Microbiology

Upon an invitation from Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States "ABEGS"; an International Conference on Biotechnology and Applied Microbiol ogy was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 12-15 November 1984. The Conference was sponsored by ABEGS and organized through coopera tion with Saudi Biological Society "SBS". ABEGS was established in 1976 with the aim of coordinating, unifying and developing all aspects of Education, Culture and Science in the Gulf States. In the field of publications, ABEGS is publishing various books, pamphlets and two scientific journals, one in Arabic and the other in English entitled: the Arab Gulf Journal of Scientific Research. This volume contains topics presented by the invited speakers and selected papers from among those submitted by participants. Selection was done on basis of some of the invited talks. Main topics of the conference were grouped into sections representing seven themes of Biotechnology and Applied Microbiology: - production of microbial proteins - utilization of microorganisms for the production of chemicals - microbial treatment and utilization of waste - continuous culture - application of biotechnology in plant science - applied microbiology and environment and - applied microbiology and biotechnology: international cooperation - tween developed and developing countries. Some of the topics in this volume present surveys of recent developments in several important areas of biotechnology and applied microbiology, while the remaining papers carry detailed research contributions.

This book is the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Studies Institute organized jointly by LNETI, the National Laboratories of the Ministry of Industry of the Portuguese Government and The Institute for Biotechnological Studies in the UK. The ASI was held in 1985 on the beautiful peninsula of Troia, once the site of a flourishing Roman salt industry. The course was the first in the NATO "Double Jump Programme" specifically aimed to promote industrial and academic participation and cooperation. As such, contributions across the whole field of biotechnology were planned and the present volume represents perspectives from specialists in different areas. Biotechnology has been defined in a recent OECD publication as "the application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents to provide goods and services" and the contents of this book, which often describe research from interdisciplinary groups, reflect this title. The value of the ASI was further enhanced by many first class poster contributions from the participants.

Microbial Diversity: Current Perspectives and Potential Applications is woven around the recent global perceptions of microbial diversity in its all embracing facets. Diversity perspectives are discussed in the context of ecosystem dynamics, taking into consideration environments that are rather unique to microorganisms. Considerable thrust is placed on the role that microorganisms play in sustainable production systems. Microbe-plant interaction arena is highlighted through the discussion of mycorrhizal partners, on which depends not only the plant community structure but also abatement of abiotic and biotic stresses. Other mutualist, rhizobia gets its due coverage whereas plant disease component carries examples from both, fungal and viral disease point of view.
