Honorable Mention, Best Book in Latin American Visual Culture Studies, Latin American Studies Association–Visual Culture Studies Section, 2023 Extractivism has increasingly become the ground on which activists and scholars in Latin America frame the dynamics of ecological devastation, accumulation of wealth, and erosion of rights. These maladies are the direct consequences of long-standing extraction-oriented economies, and more recently from the expansion of the extractive frontier and the implementation of new technologies in the extraction of fossil fuels, mining, and agriculture. But the fields of sociology, political ecology, anthropology, and geography have largely ignored the role of art and cultural practices in studies of extractivism and post-extractivism. The field of art theory, on the other hand, has offered a number of texts that put forward insightful analyses of artwork addressing extraction, environmental devastation, and the climate crisis. However, an art theory perspective that does not engage firsthand and in depth with collective action remains limited and fails to provide an account of the role, processes, and politics of art in anti- and post-extractivist movements. Creating Worlds Otherwise examines the narratives that subaltern groups generate around extractivism, and how they develop, communicate, and mobilize these narratives through art and cultural practices. It reports on a six-year project on creative resistance to extractivism in Argentina and builds on long-term engagement working on environmental justice projects and campaigns in Argentina and the UK. It is an innovative contribution to the fields of Latin American studies, political ecology, cultural studies, and art theory, and addresses pressing questions regarding what post-extractivist worlds might look like as well as how such visions are put into practice.

The first time Lou meets tall, dark, and handsome Christian, she knows he's hiding something. Why does he clam up every time she asks about his past? Why doesn't he have any family photos and why does he dye his blond hair black? Then suddenly his terrible secret is unveiled to the world - and it seems everything he's ever told Lou is a lie. Can what the media are saying about him really be true? Should Lou trust him? Or is she in terrible danger? But Christian isn't the only one keeping secrets. For what if their chance meeting was no accident at all . . .? As lie follows lie, nothing is as it seems, and soon Lou finds herself ensnared in a web of deceit, her loyalties torn, her emotions in tatters as she faces a heart-wrenching dilemma: should she shatter the lives of those she holds dearest, or betray the guy who, against all odds, she's fallen in love with? Captain Stephen Wynn Vickers joined the Cheshire Regiment in August 1914, but after being badly wounded he remustered to the RFC (Royal Flying Corps). While other young pilots were killed or injured almost as soon as they got their wings, Captain Vickers survived numerous crash and forced landings. He joined 101 Squadron in 1917 and completed seventy-three sorties over enemy territory before being repatriated in May 1918 and awarded the newly inaugurated DFC, as well as the MC. With the war drawing to a close, he became a flying instructor at an RAF station in Lincolnshire, but he did not live long enough to receive either his medals or the distinction that he deserved.Making use of an array of unpublished material, including original images and information collected directly from Vickers' family, former RAF air traffic controller Joe Bamford recounts on of the final original stories of the First World War night bombers.

Timo’s done them all! To the Gemfields from the building sites, he’s had some epic journeys filled with adventures that tested his strength, courage, and determination through the trials, tribulations, triumphs, and tragedies. They include a five-year sail around the world with his wife and daughter on their yacht Iceberg. In 1999, he was the first man to paddle an outrigger sea kayak from Fraser Island to Cape York Peninsula. It was a four-and-a-half month journey, pitting him against some of the worst weather conditions, not to mention the man eating sharks and saltwater crocodiles, and he survived by collecting rainwater and hunting for his food with his throwing spear. Then in 2003, he walked one-thousand-plus kilometers, pulling a trolley loaded with his supplies, from Mareeba to Cape York, the most northern point of Australia. A few years later, in 2006, he rode a pushbike 2,300 kilometers from the Gold Coast to Kangaroo Island in South Australia. With a combination of memories and daily journal entries, he captures the spirit of Australia in a very unique way. Like his Viking ancestors, Timo not only survived, but beat the odds.
