But in Philosophy and Real Politics, Raymond Geuss argues that philosophers should first try to understand why real political actors behave as they actually do. Far from being applied ethics, politics is a skill that allows people to survive and pursue their goals. To understand politics is to understand the powers, motives, and concepts that people have and that shape how they deal with the problems they face in their particular historical situations. Philosophy and Real Politics both outlines a historically oriented, realistic political philosophy and criticizes liberal political philosophies based on abstract conceptions of rights and justice.

This volume examines the multiple forms of reasoning in Indian politics and explores a framework to understand them. In the process, it looks at a series of issues involving the relationship between politics and philosophy, including the status of political theory, political practices, identity politics, and political ontology. The book argues that in the years leading up to and soon after independence, the task of conceptualizing politics was largely in the domain of practising politicians who built theories and philosophical methods, and further took those visions into the practice of their politics. It maintains that Indian politicians since then have not been as inclined to articulate their theories or methods of politics. This book traces the transition from philosopher politicians to politicians seeking philosophy in Indian polity in the post-independence era and its implications for current practices. It views Indian political philosophy from the standpoints of political theorists, philosophers, and practitioners. With expert and scholarly contributions, this volume will be of interest to students and researchers of Indian political thought and political philosophy, social sciences, and humanities.

Professor Dieter Misgeld taught Philosophy of Education at the University of Toronto for over 30 years. His retirement lent occasion for a series of lengthy interviews, ranging from his years in Heidelberg where he studied philosophy in its history, based on philosophical hermeneutics with Gadamer, participated in debates about Hegel with Heidegger, and saw Habermas begin his career; to his interest in Richard Rorty, encounter with Buddhism, and reflections on global politics and the new security regime. With Dieter Misgeld we see the seductions of philosophy when studied among this centuries’ greatest practitioners. What emerges in the book is a pedagogy of hope based on Misgeld’s own utopian aspirations, emancipatory politics, and caution about philosophy – Misgeld argues that philosophy is no longer helpful for any project of social and political change, that the problems of the world today are political rather than philosophical. Thus, it is political engagement rather than philosophical reflection that is called for. Considering the stature of his teachers and the depth of his own philosophical capabilities, his insistence on the limitations of philosophy compels us to reflect on our own assumptions about the promise of philosophy. What emerges is the grounding of thought in the personal character of philosophical reflection, and the drama of ideas as they unfold throughout a lifetime.

The present work on African philosophy brings in new freshness into the African philosophical enterprise as it introduces not just thoughts that could be categorized as African philosophy but also thoughts that were borne from the reflections of individual African philosophers. It covers a period that could be referred to as modern African philosophy. It includes philosophical activities in Africa between the fifteenth century and early part of the twentieth century.

Menexenus is one of the least studied among Plato's works, mostly because of the puzzling nature of the text, which has led many scholars either to reject the dialogue as spurious or to consider it as a mocking parody of Athenian funeral rhetoric. In this book, Pappas and Zelcer provide a persuasive alternative reading of the text, one that contributes in many ways to our understanding of Plato, and specifically to our understanding of his political thought. The book is organized into two parts. In the first part the authors offer a synopsis of the dialogue, address the setting and its background in terms of the Athenian funeral speech, and discuss the alternative readings of the dialogue, showing their weaknesses and strengths. In the second part, the authors offer their positive interpretation of the dialogue, taking particular care to explain and ground their interpretive criteria and method, which considers Plato's text not simply as a de-contextualized collection of philosophical arguments but offers a theoretically reading of the text that situates it firmly within its historical context. The book will become a reference point in the debate about the Menexenus and Plato's political philosophy more generally and marks an important contribution to our understanding of ancient thought and classical Athenian society.
