Tracing the deep connections between philosophy and education, Ryan McInerney argues that we must use philosophy to reflect on the significance of educational practice to all human endeavour. He uses a broad approach which takes in the relationships governing philosophy, education, and language, to reveal education's fundamental achievements and metaphysical significance. The realization of educational ideals and policies are read alongside growing skepticism regarding the theoretical and practical significance of philosophical thinking, and the emphasis on resource efficiency and measurable outcomes which characterise schooling today. It is from this context that McInerney defends the value inherent to the philosophy of education. Drawing upon contemporary continental and analytic thinkers including Nietzsche, Gadamer, and Wittgenstein, McInerney charts the role of education in shaping the child's metaphysical transformation through language acquisition. Connecting early years and primary school education, McInerney pinpoints rationality as the crucial factor which produces critical, thinking beings. He presents the pursuit of philosophically minded education as a rational pursuit which enables us to philosophise and educate others in turn, dispensing with the epistemological and conceptual foundationalisms of the past.

Excerpt from The Metaphysics of Education An attempt is made in this volume to unify the various factors in education into an organic whole. There is an underlying principle running through the discussion which gives unity and coherence to the multiplied facts and. activities in education. A metaphysics of education grounds the facts and processes of education in a world principle and shows how this principle takes care of the practical problems of education. This text emphasizes the fact that there is an inner connection and an inner penetration of philosophic principles and educational facts. A comparative study is made of educational facts and basal concepts in education in order to test their philosophical significance and implications. Such facts as teaching, the school, the curriculum, educational aims, etc., are compared and related to mind, law, interaction, purpose, etc. These problems are studied inductively beginning with the concrete educational facts, deriving the fundamental conceptions in education and finally relating both facts and concepts to a universal principle which binds both together into a harmonious whole. Finally a critical study of the principal philosophical systems is made to ascertain what influence each system, atomism, rationalism, pragmatism, idealism, etc., has had on educational theory and practice. Our pedagogical literature is filled with metaphysical concepts and it is impossible to teach even one of the common branches without using philosophical principles. Systems of thought create systems of education; methods of thought determine methods of teaching. In fact our whole educational procedure is permeated and colored by philosophic thinking. Making Sense of the World: Living, Learning and Teaching with Radical Philosophy of Education proposes that human knowledge arises from an integrated physical and metaphysical experience involving the continuing social acts of personal and community cultures and languages. It seeks to provide a means of thinking about and acting with the philosophical nature of human existence, so that the daily activities and achievements of all are respected and taken into account. Given the dominance of neoliberal politics and economics in many countries, it is unusual to find the work of educators and practitioners being framed generally by an explicit philosophy of knowledge.

Problems in Philosophy of Education canvasses several of the leading issues in philosophy of education. These include the disconnect between the disciplines of philosophy and philosophy of education, the strained relationship between educational practice and philosophy of education, the role of educational research in philosophy of education, and the lack of an independent scholarship for philosophy of education. James Scott Johnson argues for a philosophy of education separate and distinct from both the disciplines of philosophy and education and claims that philosophy of education should raise and address its own questions and concerns. Supporting this is a model of how philosophy of education should originate basic questions, together with a set of philosophic presuppositions regarding the model's logic, ethics, politics, and relationship to science and social science.
