Phonics Monster: The Alphabet (Book 1) offers an introduction to the 26 letters of the alphabet. Each letter is introduced with a list of short words using the letter, a sample sentence, and a monster illustration. On the facing page there is a tracing exercise to get students used to writing the letters. Also included are quizzes to review students' ability to hear and recognize the sounds of the letters, as well as a short-vowel reading list in the back of the book that serves as a transition to Phonics Monster - Book 2 (Short Vowels).

Each new sound is introduced with an extensive word list and several sentences that allow students to practice reading and pronouncing the sound correctly. There are also speed-reading exercises, games, and several activities and quizzes so that students can attain a thorough understanding of all consonant blends and digraphs. Phonics Monster - Book 4 is especially useful for ESL/EFL learners, as it includes a focus on similar sounds (thr vs. fr, for example) that may be especially difficult for non-native English speakers to pronounce correctly.
