An unusual full and detailed history of the Carrier-Pigeon Service in WW1, conducted under the direction of the author who was the editor of "The Racing Pigeon" and later Lieutenant Colonel of the service. As well as a good history of the formation and arrangements of the Carrier-Pigeon service, there is a roll of some hundreds of pigeons who performed particularly meritorious service, with details of some of these services, plus illustrations of equipment, birds and personnel involved. Osman helped make officials aware of the valuable role pigeons could play in wartime communications, and became head of the Home Office Pigeon Service. The birds were vital to the army and navy - for example, they were used to communicate between Royal Navy ships that didn't have wireless telegraph systems. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig mentioned the Carrier-Pigeon Service in his despatch from France and Flanders of 25 December 1917: "The Carrier Pigeon Service has also been greatly developed during the present year, and has proved extremely valuable for conveying information from attacking units to the headquarters of their formations." "Quite 100,000 pigeons passed through my hands for active service" & that "Towards the end of the war 150 British mobile lofts, with complete equipment, wee on active service on the French & Italian fronts. This will give some little idea of the extent & usefulness of the service..." Lt.-Col. A.H.Osman

They have been worshipped as fertility goddesses and revered as symbols of peace. Domesticated since the dawn of humankind, they have been crucial to wartime communications for every major historical superpower from ancient Egypt to the United States and are credited with saving thousands of lives. One delivered the results of the first Olympics in 776 BC and another brought the news of Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo more than 2500 years later. Charles Darwin relied heavily upon them to help formulate and support his theory of evolution. Yet today the pigeon is reviled as a rat with wings. How did we come to misunderstand one of humanity's most steadfast companions? In Pigeons, Andrew D. Blechman travels across the United States and Europe in a quest to chronicle the bird's transformation from beloved friend to feathered outlaw.

Tails from the Great War throws a spot light on the experience of creatures great and small during the First World War, vividly telling their stories through the incredible archival images of the Mary Evans Picture Library. The enduring public interest in Michael Morpurgos tale of the war horse reveals an enthusiasm for the animal perspective on war, but what of the untold stories of the war dog, the trench rat or even the ships pig? Through unrivaled access to rarely seen illustrated wartime magazines, books and postcards, discover the sea lions who were trained to detect submarines, and witness the carcass of the 61ft mine-destroying wonder whale. Meet the dog that brought a sailor back from the brink of death, and inspired a Hollywood legend. See how depictions of animals were powerfully manipulated by the propaganda machine on both sides, and how the presence of animals could bring much needed and even lifesaving companionship and cheer amid the carnage of war. As the centenary of the Great War is commemorated all over the world, take a timely journey via the lens of Mary Evans wartime images, and marvel at the often overlooked but significant contribution and experience of animals at war. By turns astonishing, heart-warming and occasionally downright bizarre, Tails from the Great War champions the little-known story of the bison, the chameleon, the canary et al in wartime.
