We had one quiet day at home and thoroughly enjoyed it. Rev. Louis Bod well, who had been supplying my church during my absence, was with us. We sat up late Thursday night talking over the things that had happened during our absence. I arose quite early Friday morning. It was a beautiful morning; there was not a speck of a cloud in the sky, and the air was so still that it seemed as if the very elements were holding their breath. A few moments afterward I heard a strange noise in the south part of the town. It suggested to me the breaking up of school in the olden time, when at the word, "dismissed," every boy jumped and yelled. I went to the door and saw my neighbors everywhere peeping around their houses. Some one said, " There's a regiment of them" I could hear rapid firing at a little distance. Then there came in sight the head of a column of horsemen, rushing forward at a furious speed, the reins over the horses' necks, and the men sitting freely in their saddles with revolvers in hand, and firing continuously. On the still air came the command, " On to the hotel." At this they wheeled obliquely to the left toward the main street. They passed about three hundred yards from my door in plain sight and wheeled to the left just in front of my house. They rode five or six abreast, and were splendid horsemen. They were desperate-looking men, clad in the traditional butternut, and belted about with revolvers, some carrying as many as six. Most of them also carried carbines. Rapidly as they rushed forward the column seemed a long time in passing. At last the rear came in view, and the whole body soon...

Excerpt from Sketches of Kansas Pioneer Experience Historical Society, to write sketches of my Kansas life for the use of the said Society, and he represented that Others of my coworkers, or some of them, were doing so; but I as often declined to attempt the task, partly because I doubted whether I could write much that would be of general interest at this late day, and partly because of my increasing aversion to any labor of this sort. Since the death of Judge Adams, others have made the same request of me, and more especially on the score that there are now so few remaining to tell the story of early Kansas con icts and trials, that it becomes rather a duty on the part of those who were actors to leave to posterity some traces of their foot prints. As a further reason, it is urged that, when so much has been badly written of pretended Kansas history - some by authors who were not born until after Kansas became a state - those who have personal knowledge and were living witnesses of the early events should surely be first heard. This will be no attempt, however, to write a history of Kansas, _nor to write a full Kansas chapter of my own biography, but rather to portray some personal incidents in my Kansas show my relation to, or agency in, some of the public affairs during our territorial period. Excerpt from Pioneer Days in the San Bernardino Valley Six years ago it seemed advisable that an authentic narrative of pioneer days in this valley should be left on record, and with that object in view I devoted more than two years making research and writing, preparatory to compiling a volume. In this I shall briefly speak of the work of the devoted Franciscan Fathers, who opened the way for civilization to enter the valley; then of the pioneers, who began the settlement of the city of San Bernardino; of the opening and development of the Eastberne Valley, of Grafton, Lugonia and Redlands. For the facts concerning the labors of the Catholic missionaries, I am indebted to Father Juan Caballeria, who kindly gave me permission to quote from his interesting history. As to the labors of the pioneers, it has been my happiness to be closely associated with many of these noble men and women, and from time to time I have gathered the valuable facts and interesting incidents that are embodied in this volume. For information regarding Eastberne Valley I am under obligation to Messrs. C. R. Paine, Geo. A. Cook, E. G. Judson, and Dr. Ellen Seymour; also to the Redlands Illustrated Facts for important data.
