Excerpt from Pioneer Reminiscences My father said that Cape Colony was the finest country he ever saw. The farmers had large ranches with immense flocks of cattle and sheep, and plenty of slaves to take care of them. In some places the wolves were so plentiful in the mountains that they had to gather the cattle in large flocks in the evening and kindle fires at certain distances, with slaves keeping up the fires all night to save the cattle from the wolves. Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Pioneer It is with this end in view, to preserve the life of the old days in its many colors, that these recollections are penned. There was more to this life than has been touched by the parlor romancers or makers of moving-picture films. Per haps some day these memories may serve to illumine the historian delving in the human records of the past. And perhaps, also, and this is the author's dearest wish, they may inspire young readers to hold to the hardy traditions of the 'fifties and to keep this spirit alive in a country des tined soon to be densely peopled with newcomers from the long-settled parts of the world. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Pioneer Life This is not much of a book. But I want you to buy this book, and! Read it. It is a simple story, told in a simple way, of the simple pioneer life as it was lived in the log-cabin homes, on the western frontier, in the long, long ago. And it is every whit true. Freck, the writer, is an old pioneer, one of the com mon people; and the story is written about the common people, and it is written for the common people. And you remember that Abraham Lincoln said, God loves the common people; this is why He made so many of them. Now, be good to yourself, and buy and read this book. This is all I have to say. Good-bye. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Old Journey Reminiscences of Pioneer Days The author is one of those who "crossed the plains," an achievement which at the time did not seem great in its inception nor mighty in its accomplishment, so crowded with pleasurable incidents was the journey and so full of the inspiration aroused by the necessities and ambitions of the undertaking were all. As the years have gone, however, and time has not only cast a sort of glamour over the event, but has given men an opportunity to reflect thoughtfully and in calmness and intelligence, that same journey assumes greatness in our eyes, both in inception and in its achievement. It finds a prominent place in the history of the nation, and will ever stand forth among great events. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Canadian Pioneer for the Last Fifty Years: An Autobiography It has been a labour of love to me, to place on record many honourable deeds of Nature's gentlemen, whose lights ought not to be hidden altogether "under a bushel," and whose names should be enrolled by Canada amongst her earliest worthies. I have had the advantage, in several cases, of the use of family records, which have assisted me materially in rendering more complete several of the earlier chapters, particularly the account of Mackenzie's movements while in the neighbourhood of Gallows Hill; also the sketches of the "Tories of Rebellion Times;" as well as the history of the Mechanics' Institute, in which though a very old member, I never occupied any official position. Since the first part of these pages was in type, I have had to lament the deaths of more than one comrade whose name is recorded therein; amongst them Dr. A. A. Riddel - my "Archie" - and my dearest friend Dr. Alpheus Todd, to whom I have been indebted for a thousand proofs of generous sympathy. Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Australian Pioneer IN writing these reminiscences I have been persuaded by my friends to give my life and anecdotes exactly as they stand in my memory, but in doing so I find some difficulty in blowing my own horn without making myself out to be more than I am. However, as no one else can give my life, I must ask my readers to remember, in the lines of Will Carleton, that For people's lives, full well we know, Two sets of things recall, The one of which we always tell.
