Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Excerpt from Pioneers of Progress: Men of Science; Galileo N ow Vincenzio himself, as shown in his writings on musical theory, had a rooted objection to taking things on trust, so it is not surprising that Galileo found him self continually at issue with his teachers in philosophy, and thus early struck the keynote of his stormy career. What passed for philosophy in those days had degenerated almost entirely into blind repetition of the statements and doctrines of ancient philosophers, and particularly of Aristotle. But Aristotle and the Greek philosophers generally were not accustomed to put their highly speen lative theories to the test of actual experiment, however easy and obvious such experiment might be. They contented themselves with discussions as to what ought to happen according to their preconceived notions of physical laws, rarely attempting to see what does actu ally happen. Galileo's mind worked in a very different way, and refused to bind or blind itself in such a manner, so he promptly questioned what appeared to be doubtful statements and did not hesitate to contradict if he felt he had a clear case against them. He soon gained such notoriety, in this way that he was nicknamed the Wrangler by his fellow-students, and heartily disliked by the pro fessors, who were not only sticklers for tradition, but probably found it less troublesome to rely on memory than on intelligence. Excerpt from Heroes of Progress in America IN the history of every nation there is much more going on than wars and revolutions. These are brief in duration and rapid in effect, but in the long inter vals between the years of strife the work of peace goes steadily forward, producing its changes more deliberately but with equal utility. The pioneer and the warrior are not the only figures that stand promi nent in national archives, not the only individuals that rise to the surface of things. There are many persons who attain heroic proportions not as results of bold adventure or military skill and daring, but through aid to the progress of mankind in less showy but equally important ways. The careers of these workers for good usually present little of the striking or dramatic. Their histories are not of the coruscating order and their lineaments and proportions not those usually given to the heroic figure. Yet they are often heroes in the noblest sense, and do more for the advancement of mankind than he who draws the sword in his country's defence or plunges into the untrodden wilderness in efforts to extend the borders of his nation's dominion. Excerpt from Progress of Canada in the Century Historical writing is too often a mere detailed sketch of campaigns and leaders - political, military or naval. The brilliant deeds of an army chief, the struggles of a party leader, the character of a prominent statesman, the fantasies of some passing demagogue, are given more attention than the pioneer labours of the settlers who founded a nation, the efforts of an entire people to obtain their daily bread, the general characteristics and attainments of the population of a country, or the silent, subtle undercurrents of sentiment which so largely help to make history, to create nations and to control or mould their permanent policy. In the records of the Provinces which constitute the present Dominion of Canada altogether too much stress has been usually laid upon political struggles and the achievements of party leaders.
