Plants In Cosmetics Volume 3

As the third volume of a trilogy on Plants in cosmetics, this study concerns potentially harmful components which occur naturally in some plants the ingredients of which could likely be used in cosmetic products. Its aim is to raise awareness on the implication on consumer health by use of such ingredients and to trigger preventive measures. The 24 data sheets of components, selected by the authors because they are not regulated specifically in cosmetic legislation, give useful information particularly for the competent authorities and the manufacturers of raw materials and cosmetic products, mainly based on currently available pharmaco-toxicological data. Each monograph includes a bibliography and conclusions / recommendations.

Ingredients are used in cosmetics to give them specific properties. Certain ingredients, so called active ingredients, may produce pharmacological or toxic effects under certain conditions. Cosmetic products containing such ingredients may pose a health risk both because of their potential toxicity and because they may mask underlying serious diseases and consequently cause a dangerous delay in diagnosis and treatment.The objective of this study is to give safety information on certain active ingredients which give raise to toxicological concerns and for which restrictions of use in cosmetics should be considered.Monographs were prepared for 45 active ingredients for which no specific regulations exist including, inter alia, information about uses, properties, a risk evaluation of the use in cosmetic products considering as toxicological endpoints both systemic and local effects. Each monograph includes a bibliography, conclusions and recommendations.The study complements a series of three volumes containing monographs about the safety of certain natural ingredients used in cosmetics and will serve as a useful reference in the field, for health authorities, manufacturers and health professionals in particular.

This book covers the morphological characteristics, ethnopharmacological properties, isolated and identified structurally diverse secondary metabolites, biological and pharmacological activities of medicinal plants. Ethnopharmacology is the systematic study of folklore/traditional medicines, which continue to provide innovative drugs and lead molecules for the pharmaceutical industry. In fact, plant secondary metabolites, used as a single molecule or as a mixture, are medicines that can be effective and safe even when synthetic drugs fail. Therefore, the description of these secondary metabolites as well as methods for the targeted expression and/or purification is of high interest. Ethnopharmacological Properties, Biological Activity and Phytochemical Attributes of Medicinal Plants is an important book for undergraduate and postgraduate students, pharmacologists, phytochemists, Ayurvedic practitioners, medical doctors, and biotechnologists interested in the ethnopharmacological properties, phytochemistry, and biological and pharmacological activities of plants.

Allelopathy is a new field of science, as the term 'Allelopathy' was coined by Prof. Hans Molisch, a German Plant Physiologist in 1937. Till now lot of Allelopathy research work has been done in various fields of Agricultural and Plant Sciences. However, there is no compilation of various Research Methods used. Every scientist is conducting research in his own way. It is causing lot of problems to researchers working in underdeveloped/Third World Countries in small towns without Library facilities. Therefore, to make available the standard methods for conducting allelopathy research independently, this multi-volume book has been planned. Since allelopathy is multi-disciplinary area of research, hence, volumes have been planned for each discipline. Prof. S.S. Narwal has planned this multi-volume Book Research Methods in Plant Sciences: Allelopahty. Three volumes (Volume 1. Soil Analysis, Volume 2. Plant Protection and Volume 3. Plant Pathogens) of this Book have been released during the IV. International Allelopathy Conference, 2004 at Hisar (India). Five volumes (Volume 4. Plant Analysis, Volume 5. Physiological Processes, Volume 6. Biochemical Processes, Volume 7. Forestry/Agroforestry Research and Volume 8. Isolation, Identification and Characterization of allelochemicals are under preparation. This volume has 11 Chapters, divided in three Sections viz., Entomology, Nematology and Weeds. It provides complete information about the various techniques used for Allelopathy Research in the field of Entomology, Nematology and Weeds. It is written in a simple and lucid language.
