In this innovative study of the Argonautica, Robert Albis examines structural elements of the text that recreate phenomena associated with composers and performers of epic much earlier in the Greek tradition. Such phenomena include the effect of divine inspiration on the performer, and the empathy thus created among the audience, performer, and characters of the poetry. Albis focuses on the invocations of the Argonautica, arguing that these passages reveal the poet's attempts to associate himself and the audience with the activity within the poem. Albis' approach to the Argonautica is important because it makes use of theoretical approaches to poetry while still concentrating on the place of the poet and epic poetry in contemporary Greek culture, and on the tradition the poet had inherited. This fascinating study, which includes analyses of the Homeric influence on Apollonius and Apollonius' influence on Virgil, will be of interest to scholars of ancient epic, Greek poetry, and Hellenistic Greek culture.

The Argonautica By Apollonius Rhodius (fl. 3rd Century B.C.) Originally written in Ancient Greek sometime in the 3rd Century B.C. by the Alexandrian poet Apollonius Rhodius ("Apollonius the Rhodian"). Translation by R.C. Seaton, 1912. The Argonautica is a Greek epic poem written by Apollonius Rhodius in the 3rd century BC. The only surviving Hellenistic epic, the Argonautica tells the myth of the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts to retrieve the Golden Fleece from remote Colchis. Their heroic adventures and Jason's relationship with the dangerous Colchian princess/sorceress Medea were already well known to Hellenistic audiences, which enabled Apollonius to go beyond a simple narrative, giving it a scholarly emphasis suitable to the times. It was the age of the great Library of Alexandria, and his epic incorporates his researches in geography, ethnography, comparative religion, and Homeric literature. However, his main contribution to the epic tradition lies in his development of the love between hero and heroine - he seems to have been the first narrative poet to study "the pathology of love". His Argonautica had a profound impact on Latin poetry: it was translated by Varro Atacinus and imitated by Valerius Flaccus; it influenced Catullus and Ovid; and it provided Virgil with a model for his Roman epic, the Aeneid.

The Argonautica Apollonius - The Argonautica is the best known work by the 3rd Century BCE Hellenistic poet and scholar, Apollonius Rhodius (Apollonius of Rhodes). It is an epic poem in the style of Homer, and tells the story of Jason and the Argonauts and their quest for the Golden Fleece. But it is Greek epic poetry updated for the tastes of a more discerning and rational Hellenistic audience. Little regarded in ancient times, it has since come to be recognised for its own intrinsic merit, and for its influence on later Latin poets."The Argonautica" has impacted our culture from the Aeneid to Star Trek. The Golden Fleece has become a byword for 'an unobtainable object.' And who can forget Ray Harryhausen's classic stop motion animation in the 1963 film "Jason and the Argonauts"?

The Voyage of the Argo, is an epic poem centering Jason and his legendary crew as they venture to find the Golden Fleece. Faced with various hurdles and unbeatable odds, they’re committed to achieving their ultimate goal. When a young man threatens the throne, King Pelias sends him on a futile mission to Colchis. Once there, the fearless Jason must confront the volatile King Aetes and seize his most valued possession—the Golden Fleece. With help from the Argonauts, Jason navigates multiple challenges including winged harpies, violent waters and six-armed brutes. Despite surprising obstacles, the heroes continue and are pushed to their mental and physical limits. Much like Homer’s Odyssey, The Voyage of the Argo, is a staple in Greek mythology. It’s a classic hero’s journey full of unexpected detours and ambiguous characters. Although a product of the Hellenistic period, this enduring epic has stood the test of time, continuing to captivate and inspire. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Voyage of the Argo is both modern and readable.
