This volume will mark the first time Johannes Vermeer's iconic painting will be seen in the Southeast. The painting headlines the exhibition, which highlights the artistic genius of Dutch Golden Age painters, including Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals and Jan Steen, through the presentation of more than 35 exceptional works. Through landscapes and portraits, this book will explore the idea that Dutch artists more readily embraced paintings of everyday subjects than their southern European contemporaries, focusing on capturing commonplace scenes of daily life. Dutch artists not only recorded representations of the domestic interior, still lifes and boisterous crowds, but often imbued these scenes with moral undertones and humorous, sarcastic wit. (Exhibition: High Museum of Art, Atlanta, USA (22.6.-29.9.2013)).

For many people Vermeer's paintings form the highlight of a visit to the Maurithuis. This museum holds three of his paintings; Diana and Her Companions, the exquisite View of Delft and the Girl with a Pearl Earring, all of which have become some of the world's most beloved paintings. Vermeer in the Mauritshuis is aimed at those who want to find out more about these three works of art. This beautifully designed book displays many of the meticulous details that appear in these paintings and explores their relationship with the rest of Vermeer's impressive oeuvre. Selected fragments from the paintings draw attention to aspects that might otherwise go unnoticed; such as the moist lips of the girl in Girl with a Pearl Earring, the play of sunlight on the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft as well as one of the most stunning water reflections in art history. This is the first volume in a series of publications about prominent pieces in the rich collection of the Mauritshuis.

This gem of a museum, housed in a graceful seventeenth-century lake-side mansion in The Hague, has a fine collection of Dutch and Flemish art. King William I gave the collection to the Dutch state after it was returned from France, and the house and its contents were officially opened as a museum in 1822. Among its treasures are self portraits by Rembrandt as well as The anatomy lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp, Vermeer's View of Delft (recently restored), and paintings by Holbein, Rubens, Frans Hals and Van Dyck. Also present are some of the finest examples of landscape and still life paintings to have been produced in the Dutch Golden Age.

A lively and accessible introduction to self- portraiture, reflecting on the work of over sixty artists from the Renaissance to the present day. After six centuries, self-portraiture shows no sign of losing its ability to capture the public imagination. Self-portraits have the power to illuminate a range of universal concerns, from identity, purpose, and authenticity, to frailty, futility, and mortality. In this new volume in the Art Essentials series, author Natalie Rudd expertly casts fresh light on the self-portrait and its international appeal, exploring the historical contexts within which self-portraits developed and considering the meanings they hold today. With commentaries on works by artists ranging from Jan van Eyck, Francisco Goya, and Vincent van Gogh, to Frida Kahlo, Faith Ringgold, and Cindy Sherman, this book explores the emotive and expressive potential of self-portraiture. The Self-Portrait also considers a wide range of materials available for self-expression, from painting and photography to installation and performance. In the process, the book explores the central question of why artists return to the self-portrait again and again. In her vibrant and timely text, Rudd dissects this and other important questions, revealing the shifting faces of individuality and selfhood in an age where we are interrogating notions of personal identity more than ever before.

Portrait art of Holland's Golden Age is one of the most fascinating phenomena in the history of Western art, distinguished by a powerful realism, an immense diversity and, above all, a high artistic level. The National Gallery in London and the Mauritshuis in The Hague are mounting a major exhibition on the subject in 2007. The main thread running through the exhibition is the chronological development of the portrait, interwoven with several themes like the individual portrait, the double portrait, the family portrait, the group portrait, militia and regents portraits as well as children's portraits.Within each theme a selection of works are being shown which offer imposing and also exciting juxtapositions. In this accessible publication all the exhibited paintings are illustrated in colour and have accompanying information. The texts are prefaced by three lavishly illustrated essays on the development of portraiture in the northern part of the Netherlands and the costumes worn in portraits.
