This book gives a popularized account of entomology and working in entomology in the USA. The 7 chapters by various authors cover: useful insects such as bees, insects that help control pests, insects as medicine and as food; insects and public health, including mosquitoes, the diseases they carry and their control, an account of the work of medical entomologists in the armed forces of the USA, memories of working on the development of early insect repellents, on control of screwworm and the role of dipteran larvae in forensic entomology; forest pests and their control, in particular the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar); domestic insects and their control, work on termites [Isoptera] and other pests of timber, an account of the problems of imported fireants (Solenopsis spp.) and Africanized honey bees, and cockroaches in an urban environment; agricultural pests including the development stages of control chemicals, a discussion on the public and scientific attitudes to insecticides and their alternatives, a description of bollworms, the boll weevil (Anthronomus grandis) and pests of fruits and corn [maize], a history of insecticides, insects as plant pathogen vectors and the role of biotechnology in insect control. The final chapter contains 'unusual facts' about insects and other arthropods. The text is interspersed with cartoons by Gary Larson and the appendices provide information on the American registry of Professional Entomologists of the Entomological Society of America, on the Society itself and on the American Mosquito Control Association.

This is the 2nd edition of the book 'Potpourri' by the same author released earlier. It contains stories and character sketches of a varied set of people from urban India - some real, some imaginary, most mixed. The Soulmate who uses his intelligence to steal a heart, and Swamy who is heartbroken in covid till he hits upon an intelligent idea. There are many such characters in this collection with the snapshots of their lives on the pages. In some longer stories like The Gymnast and The Storyteller, it is more than a snapshot, as they extend over longer periods. Martin Green is a retiree/free-lance writer living in Roseville, California. In 1991, the year after he retired, he started writing articles for a weekly alternative newspaper in Sacramento, Suttertown News. In the same year, he began free-lancing for the Neighbors section of the Sacramento Bee, contributing over 100 articles until Neighbors was discontinued in 2002.. Since 2000, Hes been writing for a monthly newspaper, the Sun Senior News, which goes to over 10,000 households in two retirement communities, Sun City Roseville (where he lives) and Sun City Lincoln Hills. He currently does two monthly features, Observations and Favorite Restaurants. Earlier in 2011 Martin put out a collection of his journalistic pieces, People, Places and Events. In addition to his journalism, Martin has had about 250 short stories published in online magazines and has self-published three collections of these stories (2006, 2007 and 2008) as well as a longer work, One Year in Retirement (2009) and a collection of his Observations(2010). This book is called Potpourri, defined as a mixture or stew, as it contains short stories (published since 2009), a year and a half of Observations, and something new, Last Words, which are essays On Growing Old, On Writing, On Reading, and On Travel. Martin has been married to Beverly (a water-color artist) for 46 years, has three sons (David, Michael and Christopher), three grandsons (Mason, Morgan and Logan), one granddaughter (Stephanie) and two cats (Bun-Bun and Shandyman).

The writer brings to bear virtually the experience of a lifetime to address three critical concerns: Common Sense and the Conspiracies, Covenant Echoes, and Amos Still Speaks! As for common sense, the problem is that it is so uncommon. The second topic considers the relevance of the covenant perspective for daily life. Along this line, it is said that the simplest form of covenant is the common meal. The ancient practice of hospitality expands on this notion. This text extends the subject further with a discussion of marriage, political foundations, voluntary associations, and paradigm shifts. The final topic examines the relevance of Amos for today. This is in keeping with the conviction that the more some things change, the more other matters remain constant. Then, too, if we fail to learn from the past, we are destined to repeat its tragic failures. While quite distinct, these three projects served to incite the reader to take scriptural teaching more seriously.
