The 5th edition of this now classic text draws on the strength of previous editions and now includes reference to the latest surgical techniques available in Europe, Australia and the USA. Emphasis remains on the continually expanding use of fixation techniques although conservative management remains an integral part of the text. The artwork programme - which so characterises the appeal and success of previous editions - has been fully updated although its clarity remains as strong as ever and the logical sequence of illustrations with their succinct captions affords a rewarding and effective way to learn. New edition of this popular and highly respected book. Practical, step-by-step guide to fracture assessment and management. Contains discussion of traditional conservative techniques for managing fractures. Combines clear line diagrams, drawn by the author, with lucid, concise text in logical sequence. Expanded coverage of deep venous thrombosis. Includes new devices and techniques, for example locked plate systems, and the use of vacuum dressings in soft tissue management. New sections on 'damage control' orthopaedics, minimally invasive surgical techniques, MRSA, HIV and AIDS, and bone loss. New clinical imaging.

In recent years the approach towards rib fractures has evolved. Abandoned in the past, due to inadequate instrumentation and lack of evidence, rib fixation has recently re-emerged as a treatment option for trauma patients. There have been a number of advances over the last 25 years that now allow surgeons to internally fix rib fractures that otherwise may have not had other options. However, as a result there has been a rapid increase in literature and many institutions interested in initiating rib fixation programs. Due to a variety of practitioners involved namely, trauma surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and thoracic surgeons there has been no comprehensive guide to patient selection, technique, and post-operative care. The purpose of this text is to fill the educational gap for those trauma, orthopedic, and thoracic surgeons interested in learning the cutting edge evidence-based approaches to treatment of rib fractures. This topic has caught the interest of many and has been a recurrent theme at surgical meetings over the last two years. Although there has been ever increasing levels of interest and experience nationally there are many questions which remain. This text will provide not only the theoretical background for improving outcomes in those with rib fractures but also serve as a practical guide to those interested in starting new programs. The text will include tips and tricks that can be used in the OR or at the bedside to improve patient care. Therefore, the focus will be on a comprehensive review but also including tips and tricks from the most experienced surgeons around the country who are performing internal fixation for rib fractures.

This is a practical guide for the management of common fractures of the hand and carpus. Hand fractures constitute a large proportion of all fractures and are treated by a variety of practitioners, ranging from orthopaedic and plastic surgeons to emergency nurse practitioners. This book systematically addresses all common hand fracture patterns with illustrative radiographs for each type. The reader can see a patient, take a radiograph of their injury and find an almost exact match to one in this book. He or she will then be guided to the correct treatment, supported by clear and practical instructions from the immediate management to technical tips on definitive surgical fracture fixation. The treatments described emphasise simple and reliable treatments that can be applied in most medical settings. This makes the book applicable in both first and third world countries.Versions of this book have been used and have proven popular in a number of Orthopaedic and A&E departments across the UK. It is an easy-to-use reference for medical and non-medical staff including nurses, physiotherapists as well as junior and senior hospital doctors and general practitioners./a

This new open access edition supported by the Fragility Fracture Network aims at giving the widest possible dissemination on fragility fracture (especially hip fracture) management and notably in countries where this expertise is sorely needed. It has been extensively revised and updated by the experts of this network to provide a unique and reliable content in one single volume. Throughout the book, attention is given to the difficult question of how to provide best practice in countries where the discipline of geriatric medicine is not well established and resources for secondary prevention are scarce. The revised and updated chapters on the epidemiology of hip fractures, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, surgery, anaesthesia, medical management of frailty, peri-operative complications, rehabilitation and nursing are supplemented by six new chapters. These include an overview of the multidisciplinary approach to fragility fractures and new contributions on pre-hospital care, treatment in the emergency room, falls prevention, nutrition and systems for audit. The reader will have an exhaustive overview and will gain essential, practical knowledge on how best to manage fractures in elderly patients and how to develop clinical systems that do so reliably.
