The complicated processes necessary for the best results with delicate tissues were also Omitted as beyond the needs of the mere beginner and as likely to discourage him in his first efforts. The favor with which the book has been received in the laboratories of several leading colleges has led to the addi tions which have been made in this edition to include the processes Of microscopic technique that are needed in such laboratories. While the book has been extended to meet the needs Of more advanced workers, it is believed that it is none the less adapted to the needs of beginners and private workers. The important treatise by M. Ranvier ("Traite technique d'Histologie"), now passing through the press in Paris, will also, it is hoped, soon be added to the list. The present work makes no pretensions to supersede any of these its predecessors. Indeed, neither this nor any other work yet published can profess to contain everything that the student of practical histology ought to know. In the course of our own investigations we have had occasion to give special attention to some of the chemical agents and dyes in common use, and also to examine the scientific journals, especially those of Germany and France, for records of new modes of research.
