Prayer The Key Of Salvation

A book every Catholic should read because according to the ordinary course of Divine Providence, man cannot be saved without praying. Shows the necessity of prayer for the just & for sinners, the power of the prayer of children and of the just, the conditions and qualities of prayer, etc.

There is an important truth of which thousands of men are ignorant; or if they know it, they reflect upon it seldom, and with but little fruit. Yet the knowledge of this truth is almost as necessary for all those who have attained the age of reason, as the knowledge of the mysteries of the Trinity and Incarnation. The importance of this great truth seems to be a mystery not merely to the heathen, Jews and heretics, but even to the greater part of Christians; nay, even to many of those who have consecrated themselves to God. We often hear in sermons, and read in pious books, of the necessity of avoiding bad company, of hating sin, of forgiving injuries, and of being reconciled to our enemies; but seldom are we taught this great truth, or, if it is sometimes spoken of, it is rarely done in a manner calculated to leave upon our minds a lasting impression of its great importance and necessity. Now this important truth is, that according to the ordinary course of Divine providence, man cannot be saved without prayer.

The author of this excellent book "Prayer, the key to salvation" was Michael M�ller, (Germany, 1825-1899) who was a prolific Catholic writer and priest of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. He writes this work based on the precept, to always pray not fainting, which was taught and emphatically inculcated by Jesus to the Apostles and also transmitted to us. In this book he gives a guide on how to pray, and it is packed with inspiring quotes inviting us to pray on a regular basis to keep us connected with our Creator. Prayer is important because man is born unable to remain good and obtain salvation by his own strength; but God, in His infinite goodness, granting to everyone the grace of prayer, wishes us to make constant use of this grace in order thereby to obtain all other graces which we need to be enabled to keep the commandments of the Lord and be saved. Prayer is, indeed, a universal and infallible means for man to keep up his relation between his Creator and himself. Like John Climacus said: "Prayer is the lever of the spiritual life; the medicine of the soul; the light of the understanding; the expeller of despair; the ground-pillar of Christian hope; the solution of melancholy and sadness; the riches of monks; the treasure of hermits; the cessation of anger; a mirror to show the progress in the spiritual life; the thermometer of the soul; a declaration of the dispositions of the heart; a moral certainty of heavenly glory."
