Côte d'Ivoire is emerging from a severe political-military crisis that followed a disputed November 28, 2010, presidential runoff election between former president Laurent Gbagbo and his, former Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara. Both claimed electoral victory and formed opposing governments. Their rivalry spurred a full-scale civil military conflict in early March 2011, after months of growing political violence. Armed conflict largely ended days after Gbagbo's arrest by pro-Ouattara forces, aided by United Nations (U.N.) and French peacekeepers, but limited residual fighting was continuing to occur as of April 20.

Presidential Conflict in Côte d’Ivoire: Governance, Political Power, and Social Justice explores the 2011–2012 presidential conflict in Cȏte d’Ivoire, focusing on the conflict’s impact on governance, political power, civil society, security, and social justice. The book examines the ways in which dictatorial governance detracts from democratic and civil society aspiration, the intersection of power based conflict and its impact on citizens and their security, and the role ethnic sentiments and negation play in de-emphasizing the humanity of non-favored groups. Moreover, the presidents’ conflicting perspectives on the nature of governance and political power marginalized concerns specifically regarding the significance of democracy, civil society, and social justice. Despite President Laurent Gbagbo’s challenge and demand for democracy, his presidency was unable to avoid morphing into dictatorial and autocratic governance. Autocracy and dictatorship had already inseminated Cȏte d’Ivoire during the thirty years of President Felix Houphouët-Boigny’s benign dictatorship. It is within this rigidity that Gbagbo, a product of Ivoirian socio-political history, socialized in dictatorial, ethnic, and elite sentiments, constructed his version of autocracy and dictatorship, and refused to yield power to a new president elect, Alassane Ouattara, triggering a national presidential conflict. This analysis of the presidential conflict is an effort to forestall future similar issues around the globe, but specifically in poor and developing nations, from destabilization and violence. The book concludes with an African Conflict Transformation model constructed as a consultative option for political conflict mitigation purposes.

Cote d'Ivoire, a West African country of 21.5 million people, is emerging from a severe political crisis. It grew out of a disputed November 29th, 2010 presidential runoff election between former president Laurent Gbagbo and his opponent, former Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara, who both claimed electoral victory and formed opposing governments. Their rivalry erupted into a full-scale civil military conflict between their armed supporters in early March 2011. After the election, the United States, together with most governments around the world, had endorsed Ouattara as the legally elected president and pressed for Gbagbo to cede the presidency to him. This book examines Cote d'Ivoire's election crisis and aftermath with a focus on maintaining security and public order, economic recovery, transitional justice and accountability for human rights abuses, and national political reconciliation and reunification in the region.

"On October 25, 2015, President Alassane Ouattara won a second term in Côte d'Ivoire's first presidential election since the country's devastating 2010-2011 post-election crisis, the bloody denouement of more than a decade of political instability and ethno-communal tensions. The largely peaceful election and strong economic growth that Côte d'Ivoire enjoyed during President Ouattara's first term led many to praise the country's recovery from its violent past. Scratch beneath the surface, however, and many of the key human rights challenges that contributed to past political violence remain, including lack of accountability for past human rights abuses, persistent weaknesses within the justice system, a need to complete security sector reforms, and inter-communal conflicts over land. During three research missions in October 2014 and May and July 2015, Human Rights Watch assessed the government's progress in addressing the legacies of the country's violent past and asked Ivorians about the key human rights priorities for the next five years. Based on more than 200 interviews, this report recommends that President Ouattara uses his second term to combine economic growth with an equal commitment to fighting impunity, strengthening the rule of law, completing security reforms, providing reparations to victims of abuses, and finding a lasting and rights-based solution to land conflicts in western Côte d'Ivoire. Failure to introduce meaningful reforms may reverse any progress on human rights and threaten the peace and security on which Côte d'Ivoire's economic recovery has been built"--Publisher's description.

Ivory Coast Conflict under Democracy. Crises, Ethnic tension, real War, Democracy under treat. Find out more on Ivory Coast and the safety status. A Book on Ivory Coast. After gaining independence from France in 1960, the Ivory Coast fell under the role of authoritarian but charismatic leader, Flix Houphout-Boigny. For a time, the Ivory Coast flourished economically and politically, and Boigny was hailed as a leader capable of maintaining ethnic unity and political stability within a diverse and historically disunited country. However, this period of success masked the development of grievances that laid the groundwork for later conflict. Tensions between ethnic groups began to emerge in the west of the country during the 1970s and 1980s, as Boigny encouraged the migration of foreign workers and labourers from the north of the Ivory Coast to support the expansion of cocoa plantations in the west. This resulted in some local groups feeling marginalised, increased tensions around land scarcity, and escalated anti-immigrant sentiment. This was made worse as the global price of cocoa fell and the country entered a recession in the 1990s
