This book addresses the development of our understanding of the abuse and neglect in the lives of children with disabilities. Disabilities in childhood uniquely dispose children for their abuse and neglect. Additionally, abuse and neglect dispose children for disabilities. The care and education of children with disabilities requires unique knowledge and skills and so does the consideration of their abuse and neglect. This book is based on data generated from an analysis of cases involving the abuse and neglect of children with disabilities as well as on an analysis of the data based literature in this area. Readers are provided with analysis and reflection exercises throughout the text so that they may analyze and reflect on their own awareness of the abuse and neglect of children with disabilities. Each chapter also contains a set of implications for research and practice. The final chapter focuses directly on prevention. Caregivers and professionals across disciplines will develop a new understanding of their roles in universal, secondary, and tertiary level prevention that is targeted, focused, data-based, and designed to prevent the abuse and neglect of children with disabilities in the first place.

In this book, we review abuse and neglect among children with disabilities and highlight the importance of identifying abuse and neglect in this vulnerable population. Child maltreatment has many detrimental consequences, and in the absence of a professional response, further victimisation, life-long complications and possibly early death may occur. Disability and maltreatment are defined and addressed internationally. Patterns of victimisation presentation are discussed and suggestions are given to aid in recognition, assessment and treatment. Developmental considerations in the evaluation and treatment are reviewed, as are special situations with siblings and neglect of special medical needs. We conclude with a discussion of prevention and provide recommendations to improve our understanding of how to best identify child maltreatment and to improve practice among children with disabilities, so that they may maximise their developmental and intellectual potentials.

'There's so many different types of abuse, and it all comes down to the same thing. It's making people nothing. And Fran was nothing. There was never anything nice said about her, everything was negative. And she had to put up with that, and we had to put up with that, until we all sort of believed it, almost.' Preventing the Emotional Abuse and Neglect of People with Intellectual Disability throws light onto the traumatic experiences faced by people with intellectual disability living in disability accommodation services. Through the narratives of nine people with intellectual disability and their family members, it reveals: the problem of systematic abuse; the cumulative impact of emotional and psychological abuse and neglect over time; recognition of the abuse by people with intellectual disability; and the lack of moral authority afforded to them in abuse acknowledgement and reporting. The author suggests a number of positive approaches and methods to help all those working with people with intellectual disability to prevent emotional abuse, respond appropriately and effectively support the recovery of victims. This book will prove to be indispensable for social care workers, care home managers, social workers, researchers and academics in the disability field, social sciences students, human rights workers and abuse practitioners.

Each year, child protective services receive reports of child abuse and neglect involving six million children, and many more go unreported. The long-term human and fiscal consequences of child abuse and neglect are not relegated to the victims themselves -- they also impact their families, future relationships, and society. In 1993, the National Research Council (NRC) issued the report, Under-standing Child Abuse and Neglect, which provided an overview of the research on child abuse and neglect. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research updates the 1993 report and provides new recommendations to respond to this public health challenge. According to this report, while there has been great progress in child abuse and neglect research, a coordinated, national research infrastructure with high-level federal support needs to be established and implemented immediately. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research recommends an actionable framework to guide and support future child abuse and neglect research. This report calls for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to child abuse and neglect research that examines factors related to both children and adults across physical, mental, and behavioral health domains--including those in child welfare, economic support, criminal justice, education, and health care systems--and assesses the needs of a variety of subpopulations. It should also clarify the causal pathways related to child abuse and neglect and, more importantly, assess efforts to interrupt these pathways. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research identifies four areas to look to in developing a coordinated research enterprise: a national strategic plan, a national surveillance system, a new generation of researchers, and changes in the federal and state programmatic and policy response.

The aim of this manual is to provide practical information and strategies to assist supporters of people with developmental disabilities to understand and respond to abuse and neglect of those people. The first chapter introduces the issues associated with abuse and neglect of people with developmental disabilities, including basic information about abused people and offenders, and factors that make people vulnerable to abuse. Chapter 2 covers the physical, emotional, behavioural, and environmental signs and symptoms of abuse, some of the primary characteristics of offenders, and the short- and long-term effects of abuse. The third chapter gives guidance on prevention of abuse and creating supportive environments. The final chapter contains advice on what to do if abuse is suspected or reported, and how to provide follow-up support. Study questions are found at the end of each chapter.
