The magnetic carrier meeting discuss all aspects of magnetic nanospheres, magnetic microspheres and ferrofluids. These special particles are highly useful in molecular biology to extract or purify cells or subcellular agents, in vitro diagnostics, contrast agents in MR imaging, stem cell separation, magnetic drug delivery, toxic metal removal, magnetic cell sorting, hyperthermia treatment, groundwater decontamination and magnetic particle motion analysis. Newer biophysical applications include biosensors and lab-on-chip systems, as well as imaging with Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI), a very new technique that will revolutionize non-radioactive imaging. The conference size is now around 400 participants, from all different scientific areas touching onto nanobiotechnology and thus highly collaborative.

Offering the latest information in magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) research, Magnetic Nanoparticles: From Fabrication to Clinical Applications provides a comprehensive review, from synthesis, characterization, and biofunctionalization to clinical applications of MNPs, including the diagnosis and treatment of cancers. This book, written by some of the most qualified experts in the field, not only fills a hole in the literature, but also bridges the gaps between all the different areas in this field. Translational research on tailored magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications spans a variety of disciplines, and putting together the most significant advances into a practical format is a challenging task. Balancing clinical applications with the underlying theory and foundational science behind these new discoveries, Magnetic Nanoparticles: From Fabrication to Clinical Applications supplies a toolbox of solutions and ideas for scientists in the field and for young researchers interested in magnetic nanoparticles.

The discovery of uniform latex particles by polymer chemists of the Dow Chemical Company nearly 50 years ago opened up new exciting fields for scientists and physicians and established many new biomedical applications. Many in vitro diagnostic tests such as the latex agglutination tests, analytical cell and phagocytosis tests have since become rou tine. They were all developed on the basis of small particles bound to biological active molecules and fluorescent and radioactive markers. Further developments are ongoing, with the focus now shifted to applications of polymer particles in the controlled and di rected transport of drugs in living systems. Four important factors make microspheres interesting for in vivo applications: First, biocompatible polymer particles can be used to transport known amounts of drug and re lease them in a controlled fashion. Second, particles can be made of materials which bio degrade in living organisms without doing any harm. Third, particles with modified surfaces are able to avoid rapid capture by the reticuloendothelial system and therefore en hance their blood circulation time. Fourth, combining particles with specific molecules may allow organ-directed targeting.

Electrorheological (ER) and magnetorheological (MR) fluids, which can be transformed from the liquid state into the solid state in milliseconds by applying an electric or a magnetic field, are smart fluids having the potential to revolutionize several industrial sectors. The Seventh International Conference on Electrorheological Fluids and Magnetorheological Suspensions took place at a time when some MR and ER applications were beginning to appear on the market, making a notable impact on industries. Scientists and engineers in multidisciplinary areas came together to explore the state-of-the-art technology and identify thrust areas to be focused on.This volume of proceedings collects contributions from most leading experts in the field. It reviews the most recent MR and ER applications, discusses the materials technology, explores the basic science research on ER and MR fluids, and examines the novel properties of these fluids. It provides the most up-to-date and probably the best information about the area. It can serve as a stimulating and valuable reference for research workers and students in materials science, condensed matter physics, engineering, and chemistry. The valuable information not only reports on the leading edge of research and applications, but also provides an overview of the field.

How do scientists approach science? Scientists, sociologists and philosophers were asked to write on this intriguing problem and to display their results at the International Congress `Einstein Meets Magritte'. The outcome of their effort can be found in this rather unique book, presenting all kinds of different views on science. Quantum mechanics is a discipline which deserves and receives special attention in this book, mainly because it is fascinating and, hence, appeals to the general public. This book not only contains articles on the introductory level, it also provides new insights and bold, even provocative proposals. That way, the reader gets acquainted with `science in the making', sitting in the front row. The contributions have been written for a broad interdisciplinary audience of scholars and students.
