The essays in “Journalistic Ethics” consider journalists’ ethical responsibilities, the role of objectivity, and the place of privacy in reporting. The professional responsibilities of lawyers, including the lawyer-client relationship and the duty (if any) to represent repugnant clients in an adversarial system, receive extended treatment in “Legal Ethics.” Finally, “Medical Ethics” explores the doctor-patient relationship, trust and confidentiality, informed consent, and other central topics for health professionals. The editors provide thoughtful introductions, case studies, and study questions for each unit, providing readers with a clear guide to the central issues in professional ethics.

Co-Existing in a Globalized World: Key Themes in Inter-Professional Ethics brings together, and engages with, the scholarly work accomplished individually under the banner of professional ethics in various fields. The overarching theme of the volume is that globalization inevitably pairs professionals from distinct fields as co-workers. This necessitates serious reflection on how diverse fields can co-exist and achieve superior results through combining best practices from each. The authors are leading scholars and practitioners who have diverse national and distinguished professional backgrounds. These authors particularly focus on ethical concerns emerging from the inherent symbiotic relationship between cultural boundaries, professions and globalization. Furthermore, they put focused emphasis on ethical compliance with regard to globalization of professional practices into various cultural settings. The fields represented in the volume include international law, comparative education, East-West relations, engineering and bio-medical ethics, research ethics, and international professionalism in a cross-cultural context.

John Kultgen explores the ways morality and professional ideals are connected. In assessing the moral impact of professionalism in our society, he examines both the structure and organization of occupations and the ideals and ideology associated with professions. Differing from standard treatments of professional ethics, Ethics and Professionalism recognizes that it is the practices within the professions that determine whether rules and ideals are used as masks for self-interest or for genuinely moral purposes.

"This book trains students of the caring professions across health and social care in the basic philosophical skills and knowledge needed to deal with the ethical aspects of their profession, by showing why ethical education is required. Through teaching the skills of reasoning that equip professional to think critically about the theories and arguments used in ethical discussions, it shows how we can be confident that we can rely on common moral ground; but it also points out how we need to recognise the influence of different world-views and to note how, on some issues, these can lead us in starkly different directions. By explaining relevant philosophical theories and evaluating their strengths and weaknesses - particularly in relation to what is required for proper professional ethics, it demonstrates how to employ the commonly accepted framework of four ethical principles - beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and justice using two extended case studies - the problem of euthanasia, and the question of screening for disability and the value of human life. Ethical Basics for the Caring Professions is designed for use on all health and social care and human services courses on ethics and values. It will also be of interest to academics and professionals working within these fields"--

Recent years have seen a growing emphasis on ethics education in different professions, such as medicine and teaching. However, the implications of this emphasis for professional education programs have been underdeveloped. In this volume, philosophers, philosophers of education, and ethics educators engaged in a variety of professional contexts in Canada, the UK, Norway, Malta, and Sweden assess the state of ethics education and the role, if any, of philosophical approaches to ethics for those professional contexts. This volume speaks to teacher, medical, and business education, and the education of school psychologists. Each of these fields has its own context, aims and expertise, generating distinctive ethical challenges. As such, ethics curricula cannot be uncritically transplanted from one professional context to another. Nonetheless, the arguments and analyses in this volume point to a shared concern about the role of moral respect, self-understanding, and virtue in the education of professionals. The chapters examine a wide range of topics, including empirical ethics, core concepts in professional ethics, moral agency, the ethics of ethics education, risk-taking, professional ethics as a practice with its own ethical requirements, and the tensions between the individual (client, patient, student) and the increasing generalization of professional systems. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethics in Education.
