This book investigates how housing policy changes in Asia since the late 1990s have impacted on housing affordability, security, livability, culture and social development. Using case study examples from countries/cities including China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, the contributors contextualize housing policy development in terms of both global and local socio-economic and political changes. They then investigate how policy changes have shaped and re-shaped the housing wellbeing of the local people and the social development within these places, which they argue should constitute the core purpose of housing policy. This book will open up a new dimension for understanding housing and social development in Asia and a new conceptual perspective with which to examine housing which, by nature, is culture-sensitive and people-oriented. It will be of interest to students, scholars and professionals in the areas of housing studies, urban and social development and the public and social policy of Asia.

In this unique book on housing in India, 11 leading scholars come together to offer a critical appraisal of current housing policies and programmes in India. Contributions contextualise and conceptualise the Indian housing paradigm with an integrated perspective, covering diverse regions and themes related to housing, such as: Financial constraints to adequate housing in India Policy implementation dynamics of national housing programmes in India, using evidence from Madhya Pradesh Indigenous urbanism and mass housing programmes in Aizawl, Mizoram Studies of the peripheralisation of low income housing in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and Chennai, Tamil Nadu The chapters in the book show how each theme affects the other, and suggest policy directions on the basis of past successes and failures. They seek new vocabularies to describe the processes of housing over 1.3 billion Indians—particularly capturing urban formations in the small and big cities of India, where housing plays the most dominant role. The book offers varied perspectives representing diverse regions and themes, together presenting a microcosm of housing problems and solutions in India. Housing India will be a key resource for researchers and practitioners of housing and social policy, urban sociology, built environment, urban planning, public policy, development studies and economics. In the mid-1990s, the state government of Maharashtra introduced an innovative strategy of slum redevelopment in its capital city, Mumbai (Bombay). Based on demolishing existing slums and rebuilding on the same sites at a higher density, it is very distinct from the two prevalent conventional strategies with respect to slums in developing countries - slum clearance and slum upgrading. So why did the slum redevelopment strategy originate in Mumbai, and how did it do so? What were the key issues in the implementation of such a project? This critical volume responds to these questions by closely examining one particular redevelopment project over a period of twelve years: the Markandeya Cooperative Housing Society (MCHS). It analyzes the problems faced and the solutions innovated; identifies non-traditional issues often overlooked in housing improvement strategies; reveals the complexities involved in housing production for low-income groups; and combines in-depth empirical research with historical, institutional, spatial and financial perspectives to improve our understanding of complex urban development processes.
