An excellent guide in radiology, helpful not only for medical students of different specialities but also for the radiologists, general practitioners and even medical teachers. This book is divided into two sections. Section I deals with X-rays and is subdivided into various body systems including respiratory systems, CVS, abdomen, skeletal system and bones, etc. Section II (online only) contains CT scan and MRI involving the chest, brain and abdomen. The text is divided into three parts: (i) Presentation of the film; (ii) diagnoses and differential diagnoses; and (iii) important related questions and answers with relevant short notes. This book also contains useful tips, suggestions and reminders for the examination. The approach is easily understandable, concise and does not overburden the clinicians, busy practitioners, consultants and even specialists in the midst of voluminous text around them. This new book is enriched significantly by the addition of the latest information, newly organised chapters and new photographs of radiological films to keep up with the recent improvements in this field. Pictures of old X-ray films have been replaced with new and updated digital radiological images.

Industrial radiography is a well-established non-destructive testing (NDT) method in which the basic principles were established many years ago. However, during 1993-95 the European Standards Organisa tion (CEN) commenced drafting many new standards on NDT including radiographic methods, and when completed these will replace national standards in all the EC member countries. In some cases these standards vary significantly from those in use in the UK at present. These CEN standards are accepted by majority, not unanimous voting, so they will become mandatory even in countries which vote against them. As most are likely to be legal by the time this second edition is published, they are described in the appropriate places in the text. The most important new technical development is the greater use of computers in radiology. In the first edition, computerized tomography was only briefly mentioned at the end of Chapter 11, as it was then largely a medical method with only a few equipments having found a place in industrial use. The method depends on a complex computer program and a large data store. Industrial equipments are now being built, although their spread into industry has been slow. Computer data storage is also being used for radiographic data. Small computers can now store all the data produced by scanning a radiographic film with a small light-spot, and various programs can be applied to these data.

This highly practical text is aimed at surgeons – both consultants and those in training who are interested in the advancing role played by imaging technology within surgical decision making. The first part of the book describes the principles of imaging, and the different imaging techniques available to the surgeon. The second part is symptom-based rather than organ-based, with the aim of providing a practical hands-on approach to imaging patients with common surgical complaints. Helpful bullet-points will assist the surgeon to better understand the imaging options available to them, and choose the correct modalities using a problem-based approach.
