Medical treatments designed to help people can also be harmful or fatal. Around 2.5 million people die this way each year. So if any kind of medicine makes someone unwell, they or their doctor should report it. Those reports, from nearly every country in the world, go to the Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) in Sweden. As the Centre’s first director, Professor Ivor Ralph Edwards transformed it from a tiny operation with limited horizons into an internationally acclaimed scientific organization at the heart of the World Health Organization’s Programme for International Drug Monitoring. He was then succeeded by his wife, Dr Marie Lindquist. This is the story of how a new science developed and a passionate and dedicated pursuit of worldwide medicines safety, with an unerring focus on the welfare of patients. The pioneering work of Ralph, Marie and their collaborators on every continent protected the lives of millions of people. It may yet improve the lives of billions more.

Written by experienced authors, this book offers expert personal views on what the current problems in pharmacovigilance are and how they should be solved. This book stems from thoughts and ideas discussed in a series of meetings of the International Society of Pharmacovigilance (ISoP), where concerns were raised that the current pharmacovigilance system is not delivering optimally to improve therapeutics in clinical practice. Pharmacovigilance of the future must be an active and integral part of health care delivery, and focus more on science and practices that support health professionals and patients in day-to-day care situations. To achieve this, a dynamic and sustainable development of vigilance must take precedence over the current excessive preoccupations with data processing and regulations; all aspects of medicines use and their effects need to be considered; and all stakeholders must be involved and engaged in an open and constructive debate. The work is essential reading for anyone who has an interest in safer use of medicines. It is intended to be equally challenging and rewarding, and sets out to stimulate a continuous debate on how pharmacovigilance can better meet the needs of health professionals and patients to achieve the aim of wise therapeutic decision making.

Westchester County Airport is referred to by the International Air Transport Association as HPN or, more endearingly by its patrons, White Plains Airport. The airport is unique in that it has the feel of a rural or regional airport but is within the New York metro area. Today, the airport bustles with traffic, accommodating commercial airlines, business, and private aviation. The golden age of aviation gave way to a major industry with the employment of modern airports featuring lighted concrete runways and new technologies like radio. In Westchester County, this all began with a seaplane operation at Rye-Cove in the early 1920s, followed by the call for a county airport in 1928, but it did not come to fruition until 1945. World War II generated a need for an airfield at Rye Lake, and by 1945, diminished defense needs permitted the transition from military airfield to county airport.

This is the first, full-length English language biography of Swedish astronomer and Earth science pioneer Professor Anders Celsius. It reveals what his extraordinary but tragically short life and career can teach us about our today and humanity's tomorrow. The book tells how Celsius' study, travels and relationships at the peak of the European Enlightenment helped him to unlock fundamental mysteries of the natural world, and how his life offers vital lessons for now and the future. He was a mercurial thinker who ran out of time, but his discoveries, philosophy and personality still point a hopeful way forward. Best remembered for inventing the Centigrade scale, Celsius' name now frames humanity's future in the international targets to limit average global temperature increases to no more than 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. As our world faces this life-or-death struggle, there's much we can learn from Celsius. If we will listen.
