New York magazine's "Science of Us" editor explains the compelling psychology of awkwardness, and asks: what if the moments that make us feel most awkward are actually valuable? Have you ever said goodbye to someone, only to discover that you're both walking in the same direction? Or had your next thought fly out of your brain in the middle of a presentation? Or accidentally liked an old photo on someone's Instagram or Facebook, thus revealing yourself to be a creepy social media stalker? Melissa Dahl, editor of New York magazine's "Science of Us" website, has. After a lifetime of cringing, she became intrigued by awkwardness: a universal but underappreciated emotion. In this witty and compassionate book, Dahl explores the oddest, cringiest corners of our world. She chats with strangers on the busy New York City subway, goes on awkward friend dates using a "Tinder-for-friendship" app, takes improv comedy lessons, and even reads aloud from her (highly embarrassing!) middle school diary to a crowd of strangers. After all of that, she realizes: Awkward moments are opportunities to test yourself. When everyone else is pretending to have it under control, you can be a little braver and grow a little bigger--while remaining true to your awkward self. And along the way, you might find that awkward moments unite us in our mutual human ridiculousness.

The contents of this book are dear to me. They represent a part of my life that I have had to live and deal with. We are a broken object. We are all broken in different ways. Some of us in a small piece, some in a big piece, and some in several pieces all over. As the author of this book, I was looking for those pieces I had lost, trying to puzzle over where they belonged and where they should be. It felt like I was picking up pieces of broken glass: it cut me every time I picked up one of the pieces. In the end, though, I found a way to merge them with a little bit of gold.

"[A] gripping, emotional story set in the part of history we’ll never forget." - New York Daily News On the morning of September 11, 2001, sixteen-year-old Kyle Donohue watches the first twin tower come down from the window of Stuyvesant High School. Moments later, terrified and fleeing home to safety across the Brooklyn Bridge, he stumbles across a girl perched in the shadows, covered in ash, and wearing a pair of costume wings. With his mother and sister in California and unable to reach his father, a NYC detective likely on his way to the disaster, Kyle makes the split-second decision to bring the girl home. What follows is their story, told in alternating points of view, as Kyle tries to unravel the mystery of the girl so he can return her to her family. But what if the girl has forgotten everything, even her own name? And what if the more Kyle gets to know her, the less he wants her to go home? The Memory of Things tells a stunning story of friendship and first love and of carrying on with our day-to-day living in the midst of world-changing tragedy and unforgettable pain—it tells a story of hope.

“Do I not matter" is a question that is often asked of a parent by children. The question is an honest one yet it can be difficult to hear because it can sometimes be uncomfortable for the parent to answer. Why? because it requires a moment of vulnerability by the parent, an opportunity to communicate either verbally or emotionally, answers that can be difficult to express for some. It requires an honest evaluation of digging into what the question being asked is asking. Can you as a parent sufficiently fill the void that is causing the child to question their importance in your life? Because sometimes the answers can bring up uncomfortable emotions stemming from a history that has nothing to do with the child who asks the question but, rather the unresolved issues from a difficult childhood of the parent especially when that parent comes from a single-parent household. Sometimes children can internalize things and believe that they are the reason for being abandoned by a family member or loved one. These unrealized patterns can then reveal themselves again when they themselves become parents. You discover that your children are exhibiting signs of the same emotional difficulties or patterns that you yourself experienced like anger or disappointment.
